Public Safety | TIPS Line

Trinity Washington University’s Crime Tips Hotline, (202) 884-9100, allows individuals to leave a confidential voice mail message that only the Deputy Chief of Police, Kelvin Contee receives. (202) 884-9100 allows people who have information — but don’t come forward because they don’t want to go on the record — a way to report incidents with the promise of strict confidentiality. It’s important to remember that you should only use the TIPS line for non-emergencies. Call (202) 884-9111 for all emergencies. The TIPS line has been useful to individuals in the past who provided information about a specific incident or a repeating problem but wished to do so anonymously.

General guidelines when calling:

  • Give information about who, what, when, where, why, etc.
  • If your message is too long & you are cut off by the voice mail system, call back.
  • Leave a name and phone number (optional)
  • While it is not mandatory that callers leave a first name or return phone number, Chief Murray asks that they do so. In order to investigate the tips thoroughly, the Chief may return calls to get more information or clarification.
  • If Chief Murray can’t reach the caller when she returns the call, she will leave a message and provide her phone number.

To further assure confidentiality, the phone assigned to the TIPS line is located in the Chief’s private office. She personally investigates or has her staff investigate situations based on the information received through the service. Chief Murray also tracks what happens as a result of each call.
