Public Safety | Safety Tips For Your Residence

Safety Tips for Your Residence

  • You should always lock your door. At a minimum, lock your door when you leave the room and before you go to sleep.
  • Keep valuable items secure in your residence. Lock items in a safe or other protected location. At a minimum, keep valuable items out of sight.
  • Do not allow strangers to piggyback, or follow you, into your residence hall or building if you need a key  to enter. If someone suspicious does follow you into the building, try to make a mental note of what the person looks like and what time it is. Go immediately to a place where you feel safe, lock the door, and call Trinity DPS (202)-884-9111. If you are off-campus, call 911 or alert your building’s security personnel.
  • Get to know your neighbors and other residents. Report suspicious people to Trinity DPS immediately.
  • Remember that Trinity visitors and guests should be escorted at all times. Residents must walk down to let their guests into the building.
  • If you lose your student ID card, notify Trinity DPS immediately. If you lose your keys, notify Campus Housing immediately. It’s better to pay the key replacement fee than to leave your room unsecured.
  • Never open your door to strangers. Check the ID of service people before letting them in. If you live on campus, don’t be embarrassed to call Trinity DPS for verification.
  • If you come home and see a door or window open or broken or notice other indicators of a break in, do not enter your house. If you have already done so, leave immediately. Call Trinity DPS (if on campus) or the Police (if off campus) from a cell phone or a neighbor’s residence.

Contact the Department of Public Safety at 202-884-9111.
