Today, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold the first hearings on D.C. Statehood in 25 years.\u00a0 D.C. Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who holds an honorary degree from Trinity, introduced H.R. 51, the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act” which would make the District of Columbia a state, carving out a small portion for the federal enclave which is the Seat of Government the Constitution mandates.\u00a0 Mayor Muriel Bowser, also an honorary Trinity alumna, has been leading a public campaign in support of statehood.\u00a0 The entire business community<\/a> of Washington as represented by the Federal City Council, Greater Washington Board of Trade, D.C. Chamber of Commerce, and many other organizations have supported the bill and statehood for D.C.\u00a0 Similarly, the Consortium of Universities and individual universities are in support.\u00a0 I have joined in support on behalf of Trinity and our thousands of students and graduates who are D.C. residents who deserve full Congressional representation and the benefits of statehood.\u00a0 My letter to Congress is here:<\/p>\n

It’s long past time for Congress to repair the damage of disenfranchising the more than 700,000 citizens of the nation’s capital.
