As I came around the curve and the loon call grew louder, I was startled to see a beautiful big bald eagle perched calmly on a lower branch of a small sapling just across the outlet:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2019\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2019-1-the-state-of-nature\/eagle-1-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8191\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/EAGLE-1.jpg\" alt=\"eagle\" width=\"692\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/EAGLE-1.jpg 5072w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/EAGLE-1-164x130.jpg 164w, eagle&#8217;s attention on the pond, and lo and behold, there was a lovely loon paddling in circles and crying out endlessly.\u00a0 The eagle suddenly took off, but the loon continued to circle and call out:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2019\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2019-1-the-state-of-nature\/loon-h-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8192\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/loon-h-1.jpg\" alt=\"loon\" width=\"718\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/loon-h-1.jpg 3304w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2019\/07\/loon-h-1-223x106.jpg 223w, and moving nervously to the bank of the pond and back again, head swiveling and throat bellowing the haunting loon call.\u00a0 Where was the mate?\u00a0 Usually there are two loons at some point evident.\u00a0 Was there an egg or chick the loon was protecting from the eagle?\u00a0 Did the eagle kill the mate?\u00a0 These questions ran through my mind as the eagle swooped back into the scene and perched high on a fir tree.\u00a0 The loon calls grew frantic.\u00a0 Listen and watch the drama:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Loon and Eagle\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The loon then did something I never saw before &#8212; the duck went over the edge of the marsh and walked up onto the mud and sat down.\u00a0 Loons only walk on land when broodingl\u00a0 So!\u00a0 Part of my hunch was correct &#8212; the loon was protecting a nest.\u00a0 Whether there was an egg or chick I do not know, but clearly, the parent&#8217;s protective instinct was enormous and fierce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2019\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2019-1-the-state-of-nature\/loon-h-on-next-again\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8193\"><img loading=\"lazy\" caused a furious screaming by the loon, and the eagle then perched on a branch in another tree:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2019\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2019-1-the-state-of-nature\/eagle-6-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8196\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" more than two hours, with the loon calling incessantly but no sign of the mate coming to help.<br \/>\nFinally, as dusk started sweeping over the lake, the eagle flew off, to yet more screaming from the loon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2019\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2019-1-the-state-of-nature\/eagle-takeoff-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" But I&#8217;ll check back tomorrow to see if the loon and nest are still there. I drove home thinking about the state of nature and how important it is for humans to spend some time out here in the forest. Freedom is the way of life in the forest &#8212; the state of nature requires a great deal of freedom for life to flourish. Things that constrict nature&#8217;s freedom &#8212; roads, dams, pollutants, major developments along the edge of water &#8212; all diminish nature and so should be carefully considered for the least impact.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there are power structures, just as in human life &#8212; the eagle is clearly the dominant predator in this story and on many lakes here and elsewhere.
