like writing a screed on administration policies and actions (well, I did as part of my summer fun, see my piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/pundits-blog\/education\/341908-trumps-war-on-the-dreamers-wont-make-america-great-again#bottom-story-socials\">Dreamers<\/a> in The Hill) or doing strategic planning for Trinity&#8217;s next life phase (no worries, I am planning all the time!)&#8230;\u00a0 But here&#8217;s the truth:\u00a0 aside from being relaxing, which is important, I learn quite a lot from watching the wild things.\u00a0 Here are some of the most important lessons:<\/p>\n<span id=\"First:_Patience\"><h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/gbh-long-lake-again-large\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6890\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6890\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large.jpg\" alt=\"great blue heron hunting for fish\" width=\"716\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large.jpg 1377w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large-166x130.jpg 166w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large-255x200.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbh-long-lake-again-Large-510x400.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/a>First: Patience<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>Wildlife photography requires a great deal of patience &#8212; learning to observe, read the movements, not disturb the critters while they, too, are patiently watching their surroundings, usually waiting to pounce on lunch like the great blue heron in the photo above, hunting for fish.\u00a0 Cultivating patience is a great wildlife photography habit and also something I can bring back to the office!<\/p>\n<span id=\"Second:_Discerning\"><h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/hummer-piercefield-best-large\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6891\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6891\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large.jpg\" alt=\"hummingbird on a branch\" width=\"704\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large.jpg 1315w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large-158x130.jpg 158w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large-244x200.jpg 244w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large-768x631.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/hummer-piercefield-best-Large-487x400.jpg 487w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/a>Second: Discerning<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>Discerning this very tiny hummingbird on a branch against the backdrop of heavy foliage requires both patience (#1) and knowing how to pick out details from a very busy backdrop.\u00a0 Most wildlife blends into the forest colors for a reason &#8212; the coloring is protective.\u00a0 Learning to discern small shapes and various wild things in the midst of the deep forest is a trait that also is important for work &#8212; picking out what&#8217;s important from all the details, focusing on the right things, and realizing that the light is fleeting so you have to act once you know what you are seeing!<\/p>\n<span id=\"Third:_Listening\"><h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/yellow-warbler-1-large\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6892\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6892\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large.jpg\" alt=\"yellow warbler on weeds\" width=\"708\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large.jpg 1529w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large-184x130.jpg 184w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large-283x200.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large-768x542.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/yellow-warbler-1-Large-566x400.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/a>Third: Listening<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>In the forest, along with patience and discernment a photographer needs acute listening skills &#8212; it&#8217;s often true that we can hear the wild thing before we see it.\u00a0 I heard the song of the yellow warbler, above, long before I saw it flitting among the tall yellow weeds.\u00a0 Of course, listening is one of the most important interpersonal as well as professional talents we must develop &#8212; just as I&#8217;ve learned the various calls and sounds of wildlife, and what the sounds mean for their location and likely activity, I have to pay even greater attention to listening to people!<\/p>\n<span id=\"Fourth:_Caution\"><h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/fox-3-large-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6895\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6895\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large.jpg\" alt=\"fox in greenery\" width=\"724\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large.jpg 1181w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large-142x130.jpg 142w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large-219x200.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large-768x702.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/fox-3-Large-437x400.jpg 437w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a>Fourth: Caution<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>One of the things I&#8217;ve learned during years of photographing wildlife:\u00a0 they&#8217;re watching the photographer as intently as I&#8217;m observing them!\u00a0 And when it comes to the big furry critters like the fox, above, and other mammals that have teeth and claws, a little caution and a healthy distance is crucial!\u00a0 I use a very long lens, and most often, I&#8217;m in the &#8220;blind&#8221; of my car which means I can get away from danger if need be.\u00a0 Assessing danger, knowing how to take risks and when to be very, very cautious are all skills I must use every day at work.\u00a0 Like leaders everywhere, I know that people watch me as much as I try to observe and care for them&#8230; and trying to avoid danger while enjoying the view is very important!<\/p>\n<span id=\"Fifth:_Opportunity\"><h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/duck-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6896\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6896\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck.jpg\" alt=\"duck in the underbrush\" width=\"716\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck.jpg 4780w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck-195x130.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/duck-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px\" \/><\/a>Fifth:\u00a0 Opportunity<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>Most often, wonderful wildlife photos are a result of being prepared to seize the opportunity &#8212; like the beautiful wing extension of the duck, above, which I happened to observe while looking at a bog that didn&#8217;t seem to be anything special until this duck came into view.\u00a0 Being prepared to seize opportunities is one of the most important professional talents &#8212; Stewardship &#8211; Sustainability<\/h3><\/span>\n<p>Appreciating the beauty, vitality and complexity of the wilderness and wildlife is certainly an important aesthetic value for a balanced human life &#8212; and it also is the basis for a deep moral sense of our obligation to use our human intelligence for effective stewardship of the wild environment, to ensure that the precious and vital ecosystems are able to work well and in harmony for all of the generations to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2017\/07\/adirondack-chronicles-2017-8-lessons-of-the-wild-things\/gbhll-calls-large\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6899\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6899\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large.jpg\" alt=\"Great blue haron calls out\" width=\"721\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large-120x130.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large-184x200.jpg 184w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large-768x835.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2017\/07\/gbhll-calls-Large-368x400.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/a>Honestly, whenever I am out with the wild things for any length of time, I find myself wondering if the people who would &#8220;pave over paradise&#8221; have ever spent a minute beyond the walls of their offices, or off paved roads in their cars and, instead, traveled well down rocky dirt roads to discover hidden ponds and clearings alive with the myriad life forms of the wild universe.\u00a0 Anybody who dares to say that environmental protection is unimportant should have to spend a few nights alone in the woods!\u00a0 And anybody who says that climate science is a &#8220;hoax&#8221; should sit for a few hours beside a drowning forest, a poisoned river, a stretch of once-pristine forest destroyed by development to understand &#8220;on the ground&#8221; the human activities that change the balance of nature.<\/p>\n<p>I come &#8220;down the mountain&#8221;
