{"id":5062,"date":"2015-09-11T07:53:31","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T11:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/?p=5062"},"modified":"2015-09-11T07:57:26","modified_gmt":"2015-09-11T11:57:26","slug":"voices-of-trinity-joseline-araujo-17-at-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2015\/09\/voices-of-trinity-joseline-araujo-17-at-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices of Trinity:  Joseline Araujo &#8217;17 at NETWORK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I write this blog on the morning of yet another September 11, I remember that terrible day 14 years ago and think of all who died and suffered grievous losses in the worst act of terrorism this nation has ever experienced.\u00a0 Even as we remember, we must move on resolved to work for peace and justice, to do what we can to alleviate the deeply disordered roots of hatred and violence.\u00a0 On this September 11, I am proud to share the story of a Trinity student who spent the summer learning the ropes of real peace and justice advocacy by working with the remarkable Sr. Simone Campbell and the advocates at NETWORK.\u00a0 Education and advocacy are the best weapons we have to overcome injustice, fear and violence, to establish a world where justice and peace can truly prevail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5063\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5-533x400.jpg\" alt=\"joseline 5\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5-173x130.jpg 173w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5-267x200.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-5.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0am pleased to share the essay of Joseline Araujo &#8217;17 (with summer internship friends, top row center) who spent the summer with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networklobby.org\/about-us#files\/imagecache\/blog\/page-slideshows\/SAM_1602.JPG\">NETWORK<\/a>, a remarkable social justice advocacy organization founded by a group of religious women 40 years ago at Trinity.\u00a0 NETWORK is famous for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networklobby.org\/bus2015\">&#8220;Nuns on the Bus&#8221;<\/a> movement bringing witness and advocacy to communities across the nation.\u00a0\u00a0 In 2014 Trinity\u00a0bestowed an honorary degree on\u00a0NETWORK President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/media\/2013\/12\/18\/sr-simone-campbell-network-keynote-winter-graduation-january-7-2014\/\">Sr. Simone Campbell <\/a>and she gave the January 2014 commencement address.\u00a0 The Sisters of Notre Dame have been active with NETWORK, and Joseline was able to secure this great internship through her class with Sr. Mary Johnson.\u00a0 Read on:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;My name is Joseline Araujo, Junior student at Trinity Washington University (Class of 2017), currently majoring in Sociology and minoring in History. This summer I was very fortunate to be accepted to an exciting program called Just Advocacy Week by NETWORK a national catholic social justice lobby organization here in the District of Columbia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5064\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3-296x400.jpg\" alt=\"joseline 3\" width=\"296\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3-296x400.jpg 296w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3-96x130.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3-148x200.jpg 148w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-3.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;About five months ago Sr. Mary Johnson, [Trinity Sister of Notre Dame] who is one of my favorite professors at Trinity Washington University introduced me to an opportunity that NETWORK was offering for a week in the summer. I was excited because Sr. Mary Johnson\u2019s honors theology course had me very interested in joining the social justice movement, and what better way to join in the movement then with a famous organization right here in D.C! Sr. Mary Johnson provided me with the steps to apply and spoke to me about other opportunities that she had in mind. However, she strongly encouraged me to apply to the NETWORK program repeatedly, I did and got accepted to participate in June.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5065\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4-363x400.jpg\" alt=\"joseline 4\" width=\"363\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4-363x400.jpg 363w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4-118x130.jpg 118w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4-182x200.jpg 182w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-4.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">(Sr. Simone Campbell, center in green, with Joseline and other summer interns)<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;There were 16 students from all over the country this year, Chicago, South Carolina, Georgia, Washington State, Maryland etc. During the beginning of the program, there were so many inspiring people such as Rachel, Sarah, Allison, Collin and Sr. Simone Campbell to learn from and share our views about different social justice topics in the NETWORK organization office. Automatically our group was united, motivated, supportive and fun!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5066\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-2.jpg\" alt=\"joseline 2\" width=\"469\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-2.jpg 469w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-2-173x130.jpg 173w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-2-266x200.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The entire goal of the program was to become prepared throughout the week with experiences, knowledge, and practice on how to lobby at Capitol Hill for the issue on whether certain Tax Credits should be voted on by Congress to remain in place. The main task was to speak to our house of representatives and senators of our home state about the Tax Credits staying in place and why personally and statistically. Aside from the main objective of the program, we also were able to sight see the D.C. monuments, and the nation\u2019s Capital inside and out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5067\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"joseline 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1-98x130.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2015\/09\/joseline-1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;At the end of the program, I was able to obtain referrals to perhaps a possible internship for the NETWORK D.C. office during the next summer. And the social justice work did not stop at the program, we were all told to provide a topic for a project to work on back in our hometown and follow up with our NETWORK mentors in January. I am going to continue to begin forming to project and changing social justice issues for the community.
