Receptions saluting great public service happen all the time on Capitol Hill, but this one was quite different &#8212; the great Trinity Sisterhood was out in force, with friends and classmates of Leader Pelosi \u201962 and Secretary Sebelius \u201970 filling the Leader\u2019s reception room shoulder-to-shoulder with members of Congress, Senators, Cabinet secretaries and even President Obama\u2019s Chief of Staff. Former Congresswoman Barbara Bailey Kennelly \u201958, Trinity\u2019s first alumna in Congress and now our Distinguished Professor of Political Science, had a field day greeting her former Congressional colleagues while taking obvious delight in greeting this amazing group of Trinity alumnae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-4546\" alt=\"Kennelly\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly-473x400.jpg\" width=\"331\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly-473x400.jpg 473w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly-153x130.jpg 153w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly-236x200.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Kennelly.jpg 1438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/a> As I looked around the room, I marveled at this talented and accomplished group of Trinity Women, each truly powerful and influential in her own right; collectively, what a force! Just some of the attendees included Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Financial Resources <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/foa\/osleadership\/asfr.html\">Ellen Murray &#8217;70<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sbIf5l0BVG4\">Sister Ann Kendrick SND<\/a> &#8217;66 whose creation of the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka, Florida is legendary;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/magazine-2006\/combining-tenacity-and-whimsy-to-create-something-extraordinary\/\">Sharon Brady Raimo &#8217;69<\/a> who is the indomitable leader of St. Coletta of Greater Washington, a school for children with disabilities; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folger.edu\/Content\/Teach-and-Learn\/Shakespeare-Steward-Award\/Award-Recipients\/Peggy-OBrien.cfm\">Peggy O\u2019Brien &#8217;69<\/a> of the Folger Shakespeare Library among many endeavors; and so many other alumnae whose accomplishments make <em>alma mater<\/em> proud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/1107.carey_article.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4550\" alt=\"1107.carey_article\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/1107.carey_article.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/1107.carey_article.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/1107.carey_article-185x130.jpg 185w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/1107.carey_article-285x200.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/magazine\/julyaugust_2011\/features\/the_trinity_sisters030380.php?page=all\">White House Photo by Pete Souza<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Pelosi relishes telling her own story of the \u201cTrinity Sisters.\u201d As the story goes, on the day that President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, there was a reception at the White House with all of the leaders who made healthcare reform possible, including Secretary Sebelius and then-Speaker of the House Pelosi. Nancy suggested to President Obama that he take a picture with the \u201cTrinity Sisters.\u201d He looked around, puzzled, and said, (paraphrasing here), \u201cSure, but where are they?\u201d perhaps looking for women in habits. \u201cHere we are!\u201d exclaimed Nancy, gathering around the President with Kathleen Sebelius as the photographer snapped away. The picture captured an amazing moment. Later, the \u201cTrinity Sisters\u201d also became the title of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/magazine\/julyaugust_2011\/features\/the_trinity_sisters030380.php?page=all\">remarkable article by Kevin Carey<\/a> in the Washington Monthly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Pelosi-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4549\" alt=\"Pelosi 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Pelosi-1-710x297.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Pelosi-1-710x297.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Pelosi-1-223x93.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Pelosi-1-345x144.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>(Above, Leader Pelosi presents a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol to outgoing Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius along with members of Congress)<\/p>\n<p>As members of Congress and Cabinet Secretaries paid tribute to Secretary Sebelius, the powerful leadership of Trinity Women for justice and equality was very clear.\u00a0 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spoke eloquently of Secretary Sebelius&#8217;s courage and commitment to ensuring access to affordable health care for all citizens, despite the fierce opposition she faced.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Reid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4554\" alt=\"Reid\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Reid-710x327.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Reid-710x327.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Reid-223x102.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/Reid-345x159.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>Today, I hear so many of Trinity\u2019s current students talk about the importance of sisterhood at Trinity. Graduating seniors pledge to keep their ties to each other and to Trinity strong and faithful, recognizing the critical value of this bond &#8212;- the Trinity sisterhood &#8212; through life long beyond graduation day. That gathering in Leader Pelosi\u2019s office to salute and celebrate the leadership of Secretary Sebelius was yet another example of the powerful Trinity sisterhood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/friends.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4551\" alt=\"friends\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/friends-666x400.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/friends-666x400.jpg 666w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/friends-216x130.jpg 216w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/06\/friends-333x200.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a>I thought of other occasions when the Trinity Sisterhood has been out in force.
