{"id":4507,"date":"2014-05-26T11:57:33","date_gmt":"2014-05-26T15:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/?p=4507"},"modified":"2014-05-26T11:57:33","modified_gmt":"2014-05-26T15:57:33","slug":"memorial-day-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2014\/05\/memorial-day-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Day 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4508\" alt=\"DSCN5356 (Medium)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium-533x400.jpg\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium-173x130.jpg 173w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium-266x200.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5356-Medium.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a>(Photo taken near Easton, MD at display by the Rotary Club of Easton)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Like so many veterans of World War II, my father spoke little of his wartime service.\u00a0 He enlisted along with millions of other young Americans in the early 1940&#8217;s after Pearl Harbor.\u00a0 He served in the Philippines as an Army captain, fighting in jungle conditions in New Guinea and other places &#8220;over there.&#8221;\u00a0 He was a great exemplar of the millions of soldiers and other military personnel who did their duty and then returned home after the war to build families and communities, trying to leave the memories of combat and hardship in the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">70 years ago this June, Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.\u00a0 That historic moment in military history still stands as one of the bloodiest and most important moments in the triumph of freedom over tyranny.\u00a0 Sadly, war remains a tragic reality in too many places around the world, destroying countless lives and consuming stunning amounts of the world&#8217;s resources that could go to more peaceful and productive purposes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">On this Memorial Day, as we remember the old soldiers like my dad and salute those veterans who are still returning from the fronts in Afghanistan and elsewhere, many with horrific injuries, let us praise their courage and thank them for their sacrifices.\u00a0 And let&#8217;s also vow to redouble our efforts to work for peace, to insist that governments including our own find more rational and productive means of defense other than weapons and war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>70 years after D-Day, war continues to plague too many parts of the global village.
