{"id":4211,"date":"2013-09-16T07:56:05","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T11:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/?p=4211"},"modified":"2013-09-16T07:57:58","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T11:57:58","slug":"hail-to-the-filibusters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/2013\/09\/hail-to-the-filibusters\/","title":{"rendered":"Hail to the Filibusters!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2013\/09\/AnimatedFootball.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4214\" alt=\"AnimatedFootball\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/files\/2013\/09\/AnimatedFootball.gif\" width=\"350\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sure, it&#8217;s still early in the season, but with two grim losses already weighing down once-bright hopes for glory, perhaps this is the perfect moment for Daniel Snyder to do the right thing and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/tag\/washington-redskins-name-controversy\">change the name<\/a> of Washington&#8217;s Football Team from its current name with so many racist implications to something more appropriate.\u00a0 The team needs a jolt.\u00a0 And if it doesn&#8217;t work and the team keeps losing, a name change would help to hide the embarrassment of so much money devoted to such a pathetic cause.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s even possible that nobody would notice the name change.\u00a0 Look, the buzz this morning is all about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/larry-summers-withdraws-name-from-fed-consideration\/2013\/09\/15\/7565c888-1e44-11e3-94a2-6c66b668ea55_story.html?hpid=z1\">Larry Summers<\/a> who decided yesterday to withdraw his name from consideration as chair of the Federal Reserve Board.\u00a0 Good cover!\u00a0 A rich man decides to stay rich and not risk his reputation for arrogance on public service.\u00a0 Good for him.\u00a0 Great for the country.\u00a0 Inspiration for Dan Snyder?<\/p>\n<p>And who would have time to notice a new football name, what with all the speculation about whether <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/12\/opinion\/putin-plea-for-caution-from-russia-on-syria.html?pagewanted=all\">Vladimir Putin&#8217;s op-ed<\/a> in the New York Times was really a stalking horse for his bid in 2016?\u00a0 Political horse races are so much more fun than watching big men smash each others brains out.\u00a0 (Just kidding.\u00a0 The Russian president isn&#8217;t running for anything here&#8230; except maybe he wants to be chairman of Ketchum, the big PR firm that placed his column in the Times.)<\/p>\n<p>People are beginning to notice this movement for a name change.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/2013\/09\/11\/christine-brennan-washington-nfl-team\/2802075\/\">Christine Brennan<\/a>, a sportswriter whom I greatly admire, has decided to stop using the current name.\u00a0 Other writers and media outlets are doing the same.\u00a0 Even the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/roger-goodell-calls-an-audible-on-the-washington-redskins-name\/2013\/09\/12\/aac54362-1be9-11e3-a628-7e6dde8f889d_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a> has called for a change, though the newspaper is still using the current name.<\/p>\n<p>We have legendary precedent for big league name changes in D.C.\u00a0 The late, great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/25\/sports\/basketball\/25pollin.html?_r=0\">Abe Pollin<\/a> decided that &#8220;Bullets&#8221; was wrong, wrong, wrong for his basketball team in a city that suffers so much violence.\u00a0 Maybe the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_Wizards\">Wizards<\/a> don&#8217;t always delight us, but the name is harmless enough.<\/p>\n<p>I wish the new baseball team had revived the historic name &#8220;Senators,&#8221; but still, &#8220;Nationals&#8221; seems pretty classy, though I&#8217;m not sure about the nickname &#8220;Nats&#8221; that can easily confuse listeners with small annoying flies.<\/p>\n<p>A contest to name the football team would sure be fun, deflecting the vast amounts of time and attention I know we&#8217;re all devoting to understanding Syria.\u00a0 You have read every word, haven&#8217;t you?\u00a0 Quiz:\u00a0 find Syria on a map.\u00a0 Discuss its history and traditions.\u00a0 Explain U.S. Policy in the Middle East.\u00a0 Now back to football&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So, what will we call our football team?\u00a0 Name suggestions float all over the internet.\u00a0 I&#8217;m opposed to &#8220;Washington Warriors&#8221; because the last thing this town needs is more people cheering for war.\u00a0 &#8220;Pigskins&#8221; is ridiculous, and let&#8217;s just agree that we&#8217;re not going to have a name that speaks of &#8220;skin&#8221;
