{"id":426,"date":"2006-09-14T16:53:04","date_gmt":"2006-09-14T20:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/"},"modified":"2010-10-20T17:39:19","modified_gmt":"2010-10-20T21:39:19","slug":"letter-constitution-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.trinitydc.edu\/president\/letter-constitution-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter Re: Constitution Day, 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<span id=\"Constitution_Day:_Is_Free_Speech_in_Danger\"><h1>Constitution Day: Is Free Speech in Danger?<\/h1><\/span>\n<p>TO:\u00a0 The Trinity Community<\/p>\n<p>FR:\u00a0 President Patricia McGuire<\/p>\n<p>RE:\u00a0 <strong>Constitution Day:\u00a0 Monday, September 18 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Congress has mandated that all universities receiving federal financial aid  must celebrate Constitution Day.\u00a0 This year, Constitution Day falls on a Sunday  (September 17) so we move the actual observance to Monday, September 18.<\/p>\n<p>This requirement gives the Trinity community an opportunity to reconsider the  freedoms that are essential to teaching and learning:\u00a0 freedom of speech,  freedom of assembly, freedom of belief.\u00a0 These are all part of the First  Amendment to the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>This year, as we commemorate the fifth anniversary of the September 11  terrorist attacks, some Americans wonder if the War on Terror has compromised  our basic freedoms.\u00a0 Debate swirls around questions of the balance between  freedom and security.\u00a0 If we want our government to protect us, how much freedom  are we willing to give up?<\/p>\n<p>On Constitution Day, let&#8217;s hear your comments about Freedom of Speech in the  Age of Terror.\u00a0 Is Free Speech in danger?\u00a0 Should there be limits on what people  can say, teach, write, portray in movies, sing about in songs?<\/p>\n<p>What is your opinion?\u00a0 Exercise your Freedom of Speech!<\/p>\n<p>You can post your opinion on a &#8220;Free Speech&#8221; posterboard that we will  maintain in the Well all week. Or, you can email me your thoughts and I will see  that they are posted on the board.\u00a0 I will also publish your ideas in my blog on  the website.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all for cherishing our Constitution by exercising Free Speech &#8212;  not just on Monday, not just on Constitution Day, but always.<\/p>\n<p>I also urge members of the faculty to consider other ways to incorporate the  Bill of Rights or ideas about the Constitution in your classes next week.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Constitution Day: Is Free Speech in Danger?
