Trinity Welcomes Dreamers, Encourages New Students to Apply for TheDream.US Scholarship by January 31 and February 28, 2019, Deadlines
Trinity Washington University proudly welcomes Dreamers, and encourages eligible students to apply to TheDream.US Scholarship program by the January 31 and February 28, 2019, deadlines. TheDream.US provides college scholarships to highly motivated Dreamers who seek a college education but cannot afford it; applicants must be DACA or TPS eligible and have applied for or received DACA or TPS approval. TheDream.US requires scholarship recipients to attend one of its partner institutions, and Trinity is the only partner university in Washington, D.C.
TheDream.US offers two scholarships. The National Scholarship is for high school or community college graduates (deadline: February 28, 2019). The Opportunity Scholarship is for students who live in targeted, locked-out states where they cannot get in-state tuition (deadline: January 31, 2019). Trinity is one of the first institutions to partner with TheDream.US when the program was launched in early 2014, and, at first, was the only private, nonprofit university in the nation to join the program. Trinity welcomed two Dreamer Scholars in spring 2014 and a cohort of more than 20 Dreamer Scholars in fall 2014 who graduated in May 2018. Trinity currently enrolls more than 100 Dreamer Scholars. Trinity Dreamer Sadhana Singh moved to the United States from Guyana, in South America, when she was 13. As a senior in high school in Monroe, Georgia, she knew that, as a Dreamer, “College was just not in the cards for me. I was raring to go, but I had to set my dream aside.”
When Singh heard about TheDream.US Scholarship program, she immediately applied and was accepted. She chose Trinity because “it is an excellent school, all women, and because I always wanted to go to college in the city. Trinity was the school that stood out for me.”
“My whole life changed when I came to Trinity,” says Singh. “Now I have this incredible opportunity. I don’t take this for granted – I am so grateful and so blessed. I have been given so much, and I want to give back – to Trinity, to my community.” She graduated from Trinity in May 2018 – and is now a program manager for TheDream.US. Meet Trinity Dreamer Scholar Bruna Distinto, who wrote a powerful essay published by Teen Vogue in January 2016 about an important Supreme Court case: “I used to be an undocumented teen immigrant until this new law changed my life. And how a new Supreme Court case could make me illegal again.” She writes: “There are few words that can fully describe the joy, relief, and appreciation I feel for the executive actions taken by President Obama on immigration. What he’s done for me and millions of other immigrants in the United States has literally changed our lives for the better. Without DACA, I would not be able to go to school or help my family.” Read her essay, published by Teen Vogue.
TheDream.US Scholarship Eligibility
TheDream.US offers scholarships for first time college students and community college graduates. According to TheDream.US eligibility guidelines, applicants to both programs must:
• Have come to the United States before reaching their 16th birthday.
• Be DACA or TPS eligible and have applied for or received DACA or TPS approval.
• Demonstrate significant unmet financial need.
TheDream.US Scholarships for First Time College Students: This scholarship is available to high school seniors or high school graduates with demonstrated financial need who are first time college students and seek to earn a college degree from one of TheDream.US partner colleges. Students who are currently enrolled in college are not eligible. According to TheDream.US eligibility guidelines, students must:
•Either graduate from high school or earn a GED diploma by the end of the 2018-2019 academic year or have already graduated or earned a GED diploma.
•Have earned a high school un-weighted GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or an equivalent GED score).
TheDream.US Scholarships for Community College Graduates: This scholarship is available to community college students with demonstrated financial need who have earned their associate’s degrees and seek to complete their bachelor’s degrees at one of TheDream.US four-year partner colleges. Students who are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program are not eligible. According to TheDream.US eligibility guidelines, students must:
• Either earn an associate’s degree from an accredited community college by the end of the 2018-2019 academic year or have already earned an associate’s degree from an accredited community college.
• Have earned a college GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale.
• Have not yet enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program.
• Intend to enroll full-time in a bachelor’s degree program at one of TheDream.US Partner Colleges in the 2019-2020 academic year.

TheDream.US Scholars are selected by Dreamers and people from Dreamer-supportive organizations based on their academic achievement and motivation to succeed. Scholars commit to their own academic achievement and to help build a national community of Dreamer Scholars which provides peer-to-peer support and mentoring to each other and future Dreamer Scholars.
