Summer Movies

Nothing says “summer” like watching a classic movie. Lucky for you, Trinity makes kicking back easy. Not only do we have a hefty collection of videos and DVDs on the first floor of the library (here’s a small sample), our resources are free and can be checked out for a full week (plus one renewal). You can also request materials from our WRLC partner institutions.

If you’re not sure what to watch, or want to learn about film, stop by the library to read up on film, motion pictures, and cinematography. Or, search these terms as subject headings in the catalog to find your own books.

For a little more effort, you can also enjoy the timeless summer experience of watching a movie under the stars. Check out these DC-area outdoor film venues for a summer of classic entertainment:

  • Crystal Screen Outdoor Film Festival. Mondays @ sundown, June 3 through August 26; Bell Street S (Arlington). This summer’s theme is “Blockbusters” — movies include E.T., Jaws, Inception, The Social Network, and American Beauty.

  • The Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival. Fridays @ 8pm, through August 30; Gateway Park (Arlington). This summer’s theme is “High School” — movies include The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, and 16 Candles.

The District

  • NoMa Summer Screen. Wednesdays @ 7pm, May 22 through August 14; L Street NE (DC). This summer’s theme is “Outlaw Heroes” — movies include Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade, The Fugitive, True Grit, and The Princess Bride.

  • Capital Riverfront Outdoor Movies. Thursdays @ sundown, May 30 through August 8; Canal Park (SE DC). This summer’s theme is “Marvel vs. DC Comics” — movies include Captain America, Iron Man, The Avengers, and Batman Begins.

  • Outdoor Movies @ Rockville Town Square. Wednesdays @ sundown, June 12 through August 21; Rockville Town Square (MD). There is no specific theme — movies include Skyfall, Life of Pi, The Hunger Games, and Les Miserables.

  • National Harbor Movies on the Potomac. Sundays @ sundown, May 26 through September 1; National Harbor Plaza (MD). This summer has three themes: “Animation Fascination” (movies include Brave, The Lorax, and Madagascar 3), “80s Classics” (movies include Back to the Future and Ghostbusters), and “Silver Screen Sports” (movies include The Mighty Ducks and Remember the Titans).

Grab a blanket, pack a picnic, and call a few friends — this summer could be the Best. Summer. Ever.
