Message From President McGuire
Dear students and colleagues,
If you’ve been outside at all this week you know we’ve been having monsoon-like weather. Unfortunately, all weather forecasts tell us that the rain will be unrelenting through at least Saturday night. Saturday morning has a 90-100% chance of rain every hour including thunderstorms. Additionally, the ground is soaked, meaning that walking or sitting on the lawn could be impossible.
Therefore, we have decided that our Commencement ceremony will be INDOORS on Saturday May 19. The location will be the Trinity Sports Center. The starting time will still be 11 am.
We will enforce the ticket requirements for the ceremony. Every graduate has received six tickets. If you DO NOT need all of your tickets, please bring them to the rehearsal and we will set up a ticket exchange for those who need more tickets.
We will also webcast the ceremony and you will be able to access the webcast from any device in any location from a link on our website. We will also have the webcast available in Cuvilly lounge, which is the residence hall right next door to the Trinity Sports Center, should we have an overflow crowd who will want to watch the ceremony on the webcast.
Parking will be limited on campus on Saturday but we will make every effort to accommodate those who arrive before 10 am. All campus roads will run one way from Michigan Avenue through the campus and out the exits to Franklin Street or 4th Street on Saturday, please cooperate with the directions of security personnel. Parking will also be available across the street at the large parking lot at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Irving.
Rehearsals will go on as previously scheduled in the locations already announced. The schedule is:
Today, Thursday, May 17:
4:30 pm: Graduation Prayer Service in Notre Dame Chapel
5:00 pm: Reception for Professional School Graduates (SPS, BGS, NHP, EDU) in the Payden Center
6:00 pm: Rehearsal from Professional School Graduates (SPS, BGS, NHP, EDU) in the Payden Center
Friday, May 18:
11 am: CAS Rehearsal in O’Connor Auditorium
Noon: Senior Luncheon in Alumnae Hall
Saturday, May 19:
8:00 am: All staff and marshals arrive at the Trinity Center
9:00 am: Students who are graduating arrive at the Trinity Center, bring your regalia, you will robe at your seats
- Guests may start arriving after 9:00 am
- Deans will assist students with robing and preparation
10:00 am: Faculty arrive
10:45 am: Lining up for the processional
11 am: Ceremony begins
Ending time is approximately 12:30 pm – weather permitting, the faculty and graduates will do a recessional out of the arena to the front plaza of the Trinity Center– I will give directions at that time depending on what the weather is doing (!!)
- So that everyone indoors may have a wonderful time, please ask your families to refrain from bringing into the arena any large balloon or poster displays — we know they are fun but they block the view for others …. Thanks for understanding!
- As I have done for many years, I will stay after the ceremony for as long as necessary to pose for formal photos with graduates and families. There is no need for your family members to rush forward from their seats to take photos during the ceremony. Our experience is that the photos done well after the ceremony are very nice and make great keepsakes of the day.
Thanks to all for your cooperation. We will have a beautiful commencement for the Class of 2018!! A Green Class — my favorite color!!
