Symposium on Adverse Childhood Experiences: April 25, 2019

Following the successful Town Hall described below, on April 25, 2019 Trinity Washington University’s School of Education will conduct a symposium on Adverse Childhood Experiences to prepare educators, school administrators, mental health professionals and other professionals to better serve children and caregivers who have been impacted by childhood trauma. Recognizing that there are systemic and institutional systems that need to be involved in this transformative process, the major purpose of the colloquium will be to bring representatives of the various systems together who are working on subsets of ACEs/trauma to collaborate, educate, inform, and advocate for the improvement of trauma-informed and responsive practices across systems. This colloquium will:

  • Educate and inform the current research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, and trauma, and the long-term impact on overall physical and mental health, including its effects on children’s readiness to learn, and social and emotional development
  • Illustrate the issues of social justice related to how ACEs/trauma creates a negative feedback cycle with poverty, disparity in education, and how structural and institutional racism contributes to adversity such as the school to prison pipeline
  • Explore how educational systems (Pre-K to higher education) and community (public health, judicial systems, and mental health systems) can work together towards the prevention and the healing of trauma, and build resilient communities
  • Advocacy and Action planning – developing collaborative steps – working together instead of working in “silos”.

The target audience includes Trinity faculty and students and the community partners with whom  the Initiative on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma  has been working, as well as community agencies, local schools, local child care givers, parents, identified local law and policy makers, public health officials, mental health organizations, members of the Education Trust.

The program will feature a panel of interdisciplinary experts, physicians, researchers, and mental health, wellness and naturopathic professionals, and a representative of Kaiser Permanente will be welcome to participate on the panel and to make remarks.

John King, former Secretary of Education and current Executive Director/President of the Education Trust will deliver the keynote address at the symposium.

Trinity Washington University faculty, staff and students will present research and data on their own work with ACES/trauma through poster sessions and short talks. These presentations will include demonstrations of healing strategies and interventions, and models on how to build resilient communities.

The Colloquium will conclude with a session designed to outline an action and advocacy plan to implement the symposium outcomes.

School of Education Co-Hosts Town Hall Event on Adverse Childhood Experiences

On November 19th, the Trinity School of Education co-hosted a town hall event with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The topic of this on-campus, public event was “Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): The Impact on Schools, Health and the Community Part I (What, Why, & Resources).” Serving as panelists were Dr. Marie Celeste (Director and Chair of Early Childhood Education & Associate Professor of Education), Dr. Cynthia Greer (Associate Professor of Counseling, Educating for Change), Dr. Luane Oprea (Assistant Professor of Counseling), and Dr. Deborah Taub (Assistant Professor of Special Education). This was part of the School of Education’s ongoing initiative on adverse childhood experiences. Watch the three-part video recordings of the town hall below.
