2016 AAUW Reception
Kyomi Allen and Jamilah Bowden, students in Trinity’s School of Professional Studies (SPS), are recipients of the 2016 American Association of University Women (AAUW) scholarship. Juanita Mulaire Cullen ’64 is a Trinity graduate and member of the AAUW. Juanita is an advocate for Trinity and continues to do an outstanding job in coordinating this scholarship on Trinity’s behalf.
Annually in September, The McLean Area Branch of the AAUW holds used books sales to raise money for the national AAUW Educational Funds, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund and for local scholarships awarded to support women returning to college to complete their degrees. Trinity and 2 other local area Universities benefit from this scholarship.
Scholarship recipients are invited to attend the annual AAUW meeting/reception to meet and network with members of the AAUW. This year’s reception was held Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the McLean Community Center in McLean, VA.
Kyomi, a Communications major from Washington, DC returned to school at the age of 29 and as a single mother. “I was up many nights til 3:00 am studying or working on a paper, I was often fatigued after working a full-time job and could not attend many of my son’s soccer games because I had class, Kyomi shared. This scholarship is my reward. I feel validated knowing my sacrifice did not go unnoticed.” Kyomi is excited that she is only a few credits from receiving her degree in Communications and she is not stopping until she is Dr. Kyomi Allen! Kyomi’s son and parents were invited to attend the reception with her.
Also from Washington, DC, Jamilah is a Human Relations major. “For the majority of my time in school I worked full time to support myself and contribute to the support of my family, says Jamilah. Receiving this award lightens my financial burden and allows me to focus on learning. The generosity of the AAUW inspires me to continue to help others and give back to the community. I hope to help students in the same manner AAUW has helped me.” Jamilah’s mother also attended the reception with her.
“I look forward to attending the graduation ceremony for Kyomi and Jamilah in January 2017,” Juanita said.
Congratulations Kyomi and Jamilah! Thank you, Juanita and McLean Area Branch of the AAUW for your continued partnership in helping Trinity in its mission to inspire women to Discover their Strength!
