Wright\u00a0Mills referred to as the\u00a0<i>sociological imagination.<\/i><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>Students are also challenged to grasp the disciplines theoretical foundations\u00a0that provide a framework for thinking about and explaining how society operates and or how society shapes human interactions and human interactions in turn shape society.<\/p>\n<p>Sociology\u00a0provides insight into how various social categories, such as\u00a0social class, race, ethnicity, gender and age\u00a0influences individual experiences and the operation of social institutions, including but not limited to, education, health, politics, law and\u00a0order, and\u00a0the economy.\u00a0Sociology students, through research methods and design, are exposed to analytical skills\u00a0that allow for the exploration of how various social categories influence individual and institutional behavior and how individual experiences in turn shape the existing societal social structure.\u00a0Issues of interest include poverty,\u00a0racial and gender inequalities, crime,\u00a0health, education and economic inequalities and urban communities. At the global level, sociologists are interested in\u00a0the study of migration, population growth, globalization and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Majoring in sociology prepares students for graduate school and a wide variety of careers, such as social psychology,\u00a0criminology or criminal justice,\u00a0social research, social work, public administration,\u00a0organizational research,\u00a0business, education, market\u00a0research,\u00a0health services research,\u00a0law, and community planning.<\/p>\n<p>A sociology major and minor are offered to students in the College of Arts and Sciences.
