Coach of the Year - Public
Perette Arrington
Woodrow Wilson Senior High School, Volleyball Coach

Perette Arrington's volleyball career started at Oxon Hill Senior High School, when she was a scholar-athlete as a four-year starter on the girls' varsity volleyball team. Arrington's scholastic achievements helped her receive a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball at Seton Hall University (1992-1995). At Seton Hall, she was decorated with various awards and honors including Big East Player of the Week, Sophomore Female Athlete of the Year and All-Mid East Region third team. Arrington went on to coach as an assistant with the World Volleyball Training Center and moved on to head coach of the junior varsity volleyball team at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. She joined the DC Juniors Volleyball Club as head coach and eventual administrator and interim club director. In 2000, Arrington accepted the head coaching position for the Woodrow Wilson Senior High School girls' volleyball team. Her experience and talent helped lead the team to three consecutive DCIAA league and city championships. For the past three seasons under her direction, the team has achieved an impressive 45 victories and only one loss in league play. In addition to her coaching duties at Wilson, Arrington has been serving as the women's volleyball team's graduate assistant coach while finishing her graduate degree.

Liz Hall
Maret School, Volleyball Coach

The Maret School girls' volleyball team has achieved many successes under the guidance of head coach Liz Hall. A former scholar athlete, Hall has taken her dedication to the sport to new levels. She majored in physical education and health at Penn State University and worked in both New York and Virginia school systems before coming to Maret 14 years ago. Her team posted a 15-0 regular-season record and has a four-year record of 61-1. Hall serves as the chair of the physical education and athletic departments to help better serve the school's outstanding sport programs. She also is Maret's assistant varsity softball coach and the head coach of the middle school volleyball and softball teams.

Woodrow Wilson Senior High School
Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team

The Woodrow Wilson Senior High School girls' varsity volleyball team has won five consecutive DCIAA championship crowns (1998-2002), three of which were attained under head coach Perette Arrington. The Tigers had two, six-game winning streaks throughout the season and ended the year with three straight wins on the way to their 12-0 league record and 15-2 overall record. For the past three, the team has achieved an impressive 45 victories and only one loss in league competition.

Girls' Varsity Soccer Team

The National Cathedral School girls' varsity soccer team has established itself as an outstanding soccer program in the DC area thanks to two consecutive Independent Schools League titles and a dedicated group of athletes. The squad of 19 has numerous all-league honorees and over the past two years has amassed an impressive 26-3-0 record. The Washington Post has ranked them regularly in the top 10 metropolitan area girls' soccer teams. Many of the girls compete nationally vying for the state cup championships. They also spend their time working as counselors for area soccer camps and are also involved in community service activities.

3.5 GPA

At the age of eight, Esmeralda is an excellent athlete and student. In her first year of competition at the regional track meet, she won at all three events that she participated in B the 20, 40 and 60-meter races. Esmeralda has begun to develop her basketball skills and will be the point guard for the 10-and-under boys' and girls' team at her school. She will also be attending the National Junior Wheelchair Championships in track and field this summer in Connecticut, her first appearance in national competition.

3.45 GPA

An outstanding student and a remarkable three-sport varsity athlete, Chloe is co-captain of the Maret School's basketball, soccer and softball teams. A starter on all three teams since her freshman year, Chloe is the goalie on the soccer team, and has been named to the all-league soccer team three consecutive years. Chloe has led the softball team in runs scored and runs batted in and was named to the all-league softball team two years in a row. Off the field, Chloe has a 3.45 GPA, is involved in school plays and was honored with a Dartmouth Book Award in 2002. She is looking forward to continuing her soccer career at a Division I soccer program next fall.

Kristina Burke
Model Secondary School for the Deaf

3.3 GPA

As an honor roll student and an active participator in many extracurricular activities, it is no wonder that Kristina is a role model in her school. With a 3.3 GPA, she helped lead her school's volleyball team to a winning record and second place in the Independent School League (ISL). Kristina set a new school record and career high in total number of kills (356). She also won all-tournament awards at the Fredericksburg Tune-up, Spike Out IV and the Model VB Classic. Kristina was one of the top three ISL players to receive the most votes when she was selected as one of the ISL All-League players for two consecutive years. In addition, she has won a ABelieve and Achieve@ Award at the Elite Deaf Volleyball Camp.

Kerrie McCarthy
Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School

3.96 GPA

An exceptional all-around student, Kerrie is the class president and captain of the varsity track team. She was named the varsity team's Most Valuable Player for two years and honored with the varsity track Coach's Award. Kerrie's academic accomplishments are equal to her athletic achievements, as she has received first honors for four years, was the Cloriviere Scholar for two years, Cum Laude Society, National Achievement semi-finalist and Maryland Distinguished scholar. Kerrie is the only senior in her school to be participating in the Bridge Program with Georgetown University, which allows her to take a university course on its campus. She is also involved with the school yearbook and has assisted with many volunteer events during her time in school.

Nana Meriwether
Sidwell Friends Academy
Basketball, Track and Field, Volleyball

As a senior at Sidwell Academy, Nana is the captain and cornerstone of her school's basketball, volleyball and track and field teams. In basketball, Nana has been named third team All-Met and all-league for two seasons, and is the leading scorer in the metropolitan area with 25.7 points per game and 14 rebounds per game. Her credentials in volleyball include second-team All-Met and Gatorade Player of the Year nominee. A force on the track and field team, Nana has lead her team to an ISL league championship and won the Virginia state high jump competition. Following the steps of her father, a track and field Olympian, Nana finished second and third at the Junior Olympics in the high jump and this past summer attended a Junior Olympic training program. After graduation, Nana would like to continue her athletics in college.

LaDonna Russell
Archbishop Carroll High School

3.5 GPA

Vice president of the student council at Carroll, LaDonna maintains a 3.5 GPA while playing three varsity sports. She has been named captain of the basketball, lacrosse and volleyball teams. Instrumental in getting a lacrosse team at her school, LaDonna has been the leading scorer on the team and played in the All-Star Express Tournament that is by invitation only for top high school players. LaDonna is involved in numerous school activities, including Future Business Leaders of America, Math Club, Marching Band and the Christian Service Club. She has been named as a Who's Who Among American High School Students and Who's Who Among American High School Leaders.

Olivia Saeger
Edmund Burke School

3.57 GPA

Currently a senior at Edmund Burke School, Olivia plays on three varsity sports: basketball, softball and volleyball. Olivia has been a dominant force on the school's varsity volleyball team since seventh grade, serving as captain this past season and receiving the Golden Knee Pad Award. As a member of the softball team, Olivia has served as team captain for the past two seasons, and has received numerous awards, including the 2001 rookie of the year and the 2002 coaches award. She is enrolled in numerous AP courses, is a three-time honor roll student and has a 3.57 GPA.


Ellen Cole Werble

3.6 GPA

An academic All-American in lacrosse, Ellen is a three-sport athlete with a 3.6 GPA. She was her lacrosse team's leader in goals and the junior varsity soccer team's Most Valuable Player during her time at National Cathedral. Enrolled in four advanced placement courses and five honors courses, she is the recipient of the Raiser Fellowship for environmental studies and was named as an Advanced Placement scholar by her school. Ellen also has a passion for bicycle riding and once participated in an overseas biking tour trip.

Vice president of her senior class, Asia is a committed young lady with many academic and athletic achievements over her four years at Woodson. In addition to being a varsity letter winner for four sports, she has managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA for the past three years. Asia has received the National Federal Board Reserve Award and the National Trip-Day Award for academic excellence and community leadership. Her school has honored her as a scholar-athlete for three years straight and named her Most Improved Player for basketball and softball.

Eleanor Arlook

An outstanding student-athlete, Eleanor maintains a 3.3 GPA while participating in basketball, cheering, soccer and track and field. According to her athletic director, Eleanor has proven that she is a true role model both in athletics and in the classroom. She was chosen as the captain of her soccer team and was the starting goalie. Eleanor was a recipient of the Presidential Merit Award and volunteers her time tutoring underclassman as well as elementary students in the District of Columbia. A determined student and athlete, Eleanor plans to attend college and continue to compete in athletics.

Ashanti Brooks
Ballou Senior High School
Track and Field
3.5 GPA

As captain of her school's track and field team for the past three years, Ashanti is a committed student who has maintained a 3.0 GPA or better throughout high school. She won the school's Leadership Award (2000-2003) and the Most Dedicated Award for both indoor and outdoor track and field teams (2000-2001). A member of the National Honor Society, Ashanti has been on the school's honor roll since 1999 and was named Student of the Month during the 2001 school year.

Shaina Carter

Senior class president and vice president of the National Honor Society, Shaina has made honor roll for four straight years. Her desire and leadership potential carries over into her athletics as well. She was selected to Who's Who Among High School Students for her extraordinary performance in both track and field and girls' basketball. Shaina's varsity basketball team has been ranked as high as fifth in the Washington metropolitan area.

Jamie Flowers

3.0 GPA

When a serious knee injury sidelined her during her first season of high school basketball, Jamie knew to keep a positive attitude. She took the time off from sports and focused solely on her academics. A letter-winner for both the girls' basketball and track and field teams, she has held a 3.0 GPA or better during her time in school. Jamie was named Who's Who Among America's High School Students, won the Outstanding Achievement in Techno Fluency Award and is a part of the National Junior Honor Society. Jamie took some time to stay with the basketball team as their manager until her knee recovered and is planning to join the softball team this coming spring.


Kendra Glass

3.2 GPA

In addition to being captain of her school's softball team and co-captain of the volleyball and ski teams, Kendra is a hardworking student with a 3.2 GPA. As a junior this year, she helped the girls' volleyball team win a championship title. With such a busy schedule, she also finds time to participate in various outside school activities. Kendra works for Passport to Work B a program that allows young children to get work experience and learn skills for future jobs.

Sandra Gustitus

4.1 GPA

Active in four sports at Woodrow Wilson, Sandra has been named captain of the basketball, lacrosse and soccer teams. In tennis, she received All-Tournament honors and was named most valuable player of the lacrosse team after scoring 90 goals in one season. An exceptional student, Sandra has a 4.1 GPA, is a member of the honor roll and is a National Merit Commended Scholar. Outside of school, Sandra has committed much of her time tutoring elementary school children in the D.C. area. Sandra plans to attend college and hopes to compete in sports on the collegiate level.

Shanata Harvey

3.28 GPA

While securing a 3.0 GPA or better over her entire school career, Shanata handles many extracurricular activities. She is editor-in-chief of her school's newspaper, a member of the National Honor Society, a student athletic trainer, a two-year member of the track and field team and co-captain of the girls' varsity volleyball team. Shanata was named All-East Division D.C.I.A.A. for her excellent volleyball play. She was also named Spingarn's homecoming queen in November of 2002.

Akilah Miles
Dunbar Pre-Engineering High School
Track and Field
3.75 GPA

Born with a serious respiratory problem, Akilah began running track in the ninth grade. Her early challenges in life have made Akilah a leader among her peers. She was named co-captain of her school's team for her junior and senior year. As captain, she helped lead her team to two first place medals 4x400m relay at the prestigious Penn Relays. Akilah's honors in both school and athletics include Most Valuable Outdoor Runner, Who's Who Among America's High School Athletes, West Division Champion in the 300m hurdles, and third in the 100m hurdles, National Honor Roll, Academic Scholar Award, National Scholastic Merit Award and First Honors.

Ashley Robbins

3.1 GPA

A four-year varsity player and National Honor Roll student, Ashley is a committed and responsible student-athlete. She was named Defensive Player of the Year for her school's softball team and received Rookie of the Year honors in both basketball and softball. Ashley has been listed in Who's Who Among America's High School Students and Who's Who Among America's High School Sports. She was also named Student of the Year while maintaining a 3.1 GPA. Ashley plans to attend college in the future to help fulfill her academic and athletic goals.

Ryann Williams

3.87 GPA

Ranked 19th in her senior class with a 3.87 GPA, Ryann is an exceptional student athlete. She captains her school's soccer and volleyball teams and plays on the tennis team. She was named the most valuable player for the volleyball team and helped lead her soccer team to a fourth-place finish in the DCIAA. Ryann has received a silver medal and Maxima Cum Laude certificate on the ANational Latin Exam@ and has a National Congressional Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society, was nominated for Who's Who Among American High School and nominated for the National Honor Roll. She recently was selected to participate in the Science and Engineering Apprentice Program sponsored by George Washington University.

Chanel J. Barnes

Captain of the basketball, softball and volleyball teams for the past two years at Eastern, Chanel was recently named the most valuable player for the volleyball team. For the past three years, Chanel has maintained a 3.5 GPA. She has been honored as a member of the National Honor Society, is an All-American Scholar and is a graduate of the National Cathedral Scholars Program. She is involved in numerous community activities, volunteering her time. Chanel plans to pursue a degree in engineering and help in the planning and development of communities that will better serve the needs of the residents of Washington, D.C.

A standout both in the classroom and on the athletic field, Mary-Pat maintains a 3.71 GPA while participating in three varsity sports. Mary-Pat has been a three-year player on the basketball team and was elected captain her senior year. A four-year starter on the soccer team, Mary-Pat was named captain her senior year and was honored as the MVP for the ISL league. A four-year member of the lacrosse team, Mary-Pat was elected captain for her final season. According to her soccer coach, Mary-Pat is the type of player and leader all coaches would love to have on their team.
