Top female scholar athletes, teams and coaches
from high schools in the District of Columbia were honored
February 4, 2003 during an awards ceremony kicking off the
17th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports
Day. The event, held at Trinity College, in the new Trinity
Center for Women and Girls in Sports, included the presentation
of the Scholar Sportswoman of the Year Award to two area students
who demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement and continued
excellence in academics.
The overall winners were Chanel JoAnn
Barnes of Eastern Senior High School and Mary-Pat
Kadzik of Georgetown Day High School.
Esmerelda Lovos, of Sharp
Health School, was honored as the Washington Community Action
Program Sportswoman of the Year for an Athlete with a Physical
Disability.
Coach of the Year Awards went to Perette
Arrington of Woodrow Wilson Senior High School and
Liz Hall of the Maret School.
Public and private school team awards went to the Woodrow
Wilson Senior High School Girls' Varsity Volleyball Team and
the National Cathedral School Girls'
Varsity Soccer Team.
