Remarks for the Dedication
of the Trinity Center
Ms. Maya Caraway ’04
President, Student Government Association
I read once that in order for inequality to be moved, economic and legislative
policies both should be in place for it to be possible. In 1972, Congress
passed Title IX, a landmark legislation that banned sex discrimination
in schools, whether it be in academics of athletics. My professor said
just the other day that one day her her daughter will be told that she
cannot do something because she is a girl.
At Trinity College today, November 23, 2002, no woman or girl will have
to hear "I'm sorry, you can't play here," or "You have
to play in the basement." Be her African American, white, Puerto
Rican or Korean, she now has the facilities to show her community her
talent and fitness abilities.
I am proud to be a part of this historic day for Trinity and I'm glad
that you can be here for the dedication of a project that helps to eliminate
gender inequality and emphasizes a Trinity motto of building women for
leadership, with keen abilities for centuries to come.
