Submission Guidelines

Trinity Washington University’s literary magazine The Record welcomes Trinity student and alumni artists and writers. We are looking for work only you can create.

TR seeks original work, previously unpublished in any form (including social media). Please do not submit work that has been simultaneously submitted elsewhere.

Here’s how to submit

Email your submissions to therecord@trinitydc.edu. Submit up to five submissions. Choose your best.

Please attach a file that contains your work. Please do not paste your text or image into the body of the email, or link us to an online document.

Please include in your email:

  • Your name, as you want it to appear with your work
  • A title for each piece submitted (we will allow “Untitled,” but we prefer titled work)
  • Explain your connection to Trinity (are you a student? Which program and year? If you are an alumna, which degree and year?)
  • Your Trinity email address. All correspondence will be sent there.

Guidelines for writers

The Record publishes original writing: poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction, short essays and drama. Subject and style and voice: we’re open. We prefer shorter submissions of one or a few pages. If you write long, send us a section.

Guidelines for graphic artists

The Record accepts high-quality photography as well as photographs of original art: paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages.

The file should be an attachment, not pasted into the email or linked to online.

We need high-resolution – 300 dpi/ppi or higher. It has to print well.

Images of artwork must be clear, taken directly above or in front of the art, cropped appropriately.

Please, no frames, watermarks, or digital signatures. An artist’s signature is acceptable.

Our journal is 8.5” high, 5.5” wide, so graphics in tall, portrait orientation have an advantage over wide, landscape images.

The Record’s Review and Response & Publication Process

All submissions will be reviewed by student editors. Submissions not meeting our guidelines are rejected. Please bear in mind that not all works submitted will be published.

The staff reserves the right to request changes; the artist may agree or refuse. On written submissions, we reserve the right to correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.

TR staff members may submit work, but are recused from judging their own submissions.

Contributors are typically notified via email of the staff’s decision during February or March.

Our email notifying you of acceptance must be replied to in order to grant us the right to publish. Without a reply granting us this right, The Record can rescind its acceptance before publication. This same email also requests the right to use your work (or elements thereof) in on-campus or The Record webpage promotions; you may opt out of granting us this right in your reply. Your work cannot be published if you do not reply to the acceptance email.

We reserve two copies of the magazine for all accepted contributors.

The Record is typically published, in print and online, in the spring of each year. Print issues were suspended in 2020, but we expect to return to print form in 2023.

Again, contributors must be students or alumni of Trinity Washington University.
