    Capstone Quick Start: Stay a Step Ahead in Writing your Capstone or Thesis Paper

    There are three challenges (or opportunities) to the research paper: the literature review, the data collection instrument, and the data analysis.  Following my simple 6 step plan you will be ready to meet these challenges, convert them into opportunities, and be more than ready to start your capstone.  This seminar is appropriate for any SPS graduate student in the MSA, MA COM and MA ISS degree programs who is preparing for the capstone or thesis course in the Fall 2012 semester.

    Many students I encounter find citing sources, building reference lists, and avoiding plagiarism more difficult and confusing as any scholarly skill you might name.  But it is easy to do and a few tips regarding citation elements and paraphrasing can improve your writing and assist you in acknowledging the scholars and practitioners who you use to support your academic papers, especially the capstone or thesis paper.  This seminar is appropriate for any SPS student in any degree program.

    Understanding Your Academic Plan and Self Service 101

    The academic plan is like a map that guides students to successful degree completion. This workshop will detail the important parts of the academic plan which include understanding the role of core classes and major requirements, minimum grades, GPA calculation, and the importance of satisfactory academic progress. The workshop will also provide an overview of how to access this information via Self-Service.

    The Writing Process Workshop

    This workshop will teach students the importance of approaching every writing assignment as a process.  Students will be given strategies to help them effectively chose topics, focus, and prepare outlines. Topics covered will include:  prewriting, drafting, revising, and proofreading.
