Chief Operating Officer with Housing Unlimited Inc.
Housing Unlimited Inc. (www.housingunlimited.org) is seeking a competent, versatile mission-driven Chief Operating Officer to join the leadership team. This new position provides an exciting opportunity to build capacity, enabling Housing Unlimited to grow its mission to provide permanent, affordable housing for low-income individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are able to live independently.
Founded in 1991 by parents of adults with psychiatric disabilities, Housing Unlimited (HUI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland. We provide independent housing which separates tenants’ housing from their individual support services. Our first house was acquired in 1994. Today, HUI serves over 150 tenants in 55 homes scattered throughout Montgomery County. For more information, see www.housingunlimited.org.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this is an opportunity for an experienced professional to serve as the organizational management and business systems support partner to the Executive Director. The COO will have 2.75 direct reports including the Director of Office Operations and Program Director (both full-time staff positions) and part-time Development Director, Tenants Council Consultant, and Accounting Consultant. HUI recently completed a five-year strategic plan with a growth focus. HUI plans to add two to four homes to its portfolio in each of the next five fiscal years. The new COO will participate in the development of the COO role, partner with the team to further develop appropriate business infrastructure systems that support current and future activities, and partner with the Executive Director to support HUI’s strategic growth.
The successful candidate will bring a passion for HUI’s mission, be highly skilled at working with a team to advance business infrastructure systems and be experienced in managing nonprofit operations. An understanding of the housing/real estate development market in suburban Maryland would enable the COO to support the Executive Director in identifying and acquiring new properties. Key priorities include learning the property acquisition process and partnering with the Executive Director to add the properties as laid out in the plan; leading the operations internal to the organization, thereby enabling the Executive Director to engage more actively with existing and new external stakeholders; and overseeing annual planning and the development/implementation of program evaluations.
The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated knowledge, competence and experience across all aspects of operations; a commitment to HUI’s mission and an appreciation for the community; a collaborative team-oriented management style; excellent verbal and written communication skills; detail oriented, excellent with numbers and pride in codifying/translating practices into policies and procedures; the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and address important details while supporting strategic goals; and a willingness to work across projects and functional areas to achieve HUI’s goals. More detailed information can be found at www.transitionsguides.com/HUI.
