The Consumer Federation of America (CFA) is seeking a financial services advocate to advance policies and practices that protect consumers from abusive financial products and expand access to safe and sustainable products and services. Specifically, we seek to hire a well-qualified professional, with a strong public interest commitment, to join the organization’s financial services team building a national auto insurance campaign, establishing consumer protections for high-cost credit, and continuing CFA’s leadership role in state and national financial reform efforts.
Help develop a national auto insurance campaign: The Financial Services Advocate will work to develop and expand CFA’s auto insurance reform campaign, develop research projects that elevate the impact of high auto insurance costs on low-income drivers and work with financial services staff to identify dynamic speakers and topics for bi-monthly coalition calls. The Advocate will also work to create fact sheets and other collateral to engage consumer groups, policymakers and the media and support state-level auto insurance reform efforts.
Research the impact of high cost lending and work to reduce the negative impact on consumers: The Financial Services Advocate will play an important role in implementing CFA’s high cost lending research agenda, expanding CFA’s high cost lending coalition and work closely with senior staff to organize the annual Financial Services Conference and the High Cost Lending Summit. The Financial Services Advocate will work to produce CFA’s high-cost credit market analyses, including analyses of storefront payday lending, online and tribal-affiliated lending, and overdraft lending. The Advocate will also develop fact sheets and other collateral to engage consumer groups, policymakers and the media.
Help build and maintain support for financial reform efforts: The Financial Services Advocate will produce press releases and responses to industry, legislative and regulatory announcements detailing CFA’s position and the impact on consumer protections or consumer choice, in conjunction with national, state and local partners. The Advocate will also represent CFA at national and local coalition meetings and ensure that the consumer interest is represented in a wide range of financial services reform discussions.
CFA seeks a highly competent and productive professional with a strong commitment to the public interest and with at least several years work experience. The position is full-time and based in Washington, DC.
