Trinity’s Alternative Spring Break Program

Let’s send off in supportive and encouraging ways all those going to Selma, AL this Saturday, March 3 – March 10 for our ASB service experience.  Our student participants are:  Minette Achankeng, Egochi Achinonu, Tiara Bland, Shia Byers, Brenna Daugherty, Labria Rivers, Alexis Santiago, and Reyna Trinidad.  The advisors are:  RC, Miriam Ellis; Assistant Director of Residence Life, Najmah Ahmad; and Director of Campus Ministry, Sr. Mary Ellen.  The highlights of our experience will include:

  • Rehabbing, painting, beautifying houses through Blackbelt & Central Alabama Housing
  • Experiencing the people, culture, and spirituality of Selma (we are arriving on the weekend of the historic “Bridge Crossing Jubilee”)
  • Participating in the rich historical context of the Civil Rights movement through meeting people who marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge (and walking across the bridge ourselves), visiting Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, following the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail ending in the city of Montgomery at the Rosa Parks Library and Museum

Our Selma group has been engaged in weekly meetings since January.  Members of the campus community have facilitated these sessions on each of our Learning Objectives.  Five of our students have registered for Phil 491: Internship in Ethics, and will combine the action/reflection/action model of transformative service into a “Community-Based Learning” component for academic credit.  Special thanks to Dr. San Juan, who as a member of the ASB, ’12 Committee, made the Internship a reality.

Campus Ministry wants to offer a special thanks to President McGuire for her support in the resurgence of Trinity’s ASB.
