Communications Specialist – The Education Trust
The Education Trust seeks a communications specialist to join the organization’s division of Government Affairs and Communications. Reporting to the director of communications, the communications specialist is the organization’s primary point of contact for media throughout the nation, supporting efforts to increase awareness of and commitment to our mission, pre-K through college.
The communications specialist responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Helping create and carry out short- and long-term media relations strategies and track their results; Serving as the organization’s primary point of contact for media representatives throughout the country; Assisting in the writing and distribution of news releases, statements, opinions, and other materials in a timely, effective manner for a variety of key audiences; Coordinating news conferences, webinar trainings, and other related work; and Collaborating closely with staff to ensure appropriate organizational positioning and messaging.
Candidates should enjoy working in a dynamic, results-oriented environment in which expectations are high for both the quality and speed of work. In addition, they should have the following: A professional background in media relations or related field with demonstrated ability to forge and maintain relationships with journalists. Experience in an education policy or other issue advocacy environment is a plus; Excellent writing and speaking skills; The ability to prioritize and multi-task in a demanding, strategic, fast-paced environment; Solid follow-through and attention to detail; Strong computer skills. Previous experience with public relations management software – such as Vocus, Cision, and LexisNexis – is preferred; An understanding of the role of communications in achieving advocacy goals and policy change; Commitment to the Education Trust’s core values and mission; and An undergraduate degree is required.
