Senior Communications Associate
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities seeks a Senior Communications Associate for its dynamic communications team.
The Center, a leading nonprofit policy institute, conducts research and analysis on budget, tax, health care, social insurance, and poverty policies at both the federal and state levels. The Center has attained a national reputation for its unique capacity to blend credible, timely analyses with activities designed to enable policymakers and the media to use its work.
The Center is widely cited by the media and is consistently able to inform news stories and editorials in major mainstream and new media outlets. The organization maintains strong relationships with national and state press corps and bloggers, conducts briefings, distributes a wide range of studies, issue briefs, blog posts, podcasts and other multimedia content. It is known for its ability to respond rapidly to breaking policy issues.
The Senior Communications Associate position entails two significant responsibilities: writing and editing materials and conducting media relations on behalf of the Center. The Senior Communications Associate will draft, edit, and proof analyses, press releases, blog posts, opinion pieces, and talking points. He or she will also work with the team to develop and implement communications strategies and messaging on national policy issues. Other responsibilities include cultivating media contacts, promoting the Center’s work with media and other audiences, and fielding press inquiries as part of a busy press office.
Qualifications: Candidates must have significant communications and media-relations experience and a track record of generating media coverage on policy issues, as well as an ability to digest complex concepts relating to policy issues and distill them into clear, easily understandable written materials, often on a tight timeline. Knowledge of domestic policy issues and experience in influencing public policy debates is preferred. Applicants must have excellent writing skills, be highly motivated and creative, and able to juggle competing priorities.
