Local Positions with International Firms

 
 

I have been retained to find qualified candidates for two positions on behalf of CARANA Corporation (www.carana.com), an international economic development consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia, with an excellent reputation and known for providing innovative and leading-edge technical assistance.  For 25 years, CARANA has specialized in market-led solutions to development challenges in more than 80 countries, packaging their expertise with on-the-ground resources for continuing, cost-effective results.   The two positions are full-time permanent Staff positions based in CARANA’s HQ office in Arlington, Virginia, US and thus applicants must hold an authorization to work in the US prior to applying. Position #1: LAC Senior Manager                     Location: Arlington, VA (with 30% travel.)

CARANA is seeking a well-organized, highly motivated candidate to provide technical and project management expertise for its growing Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Regional Practice. This position offers professional growth and exposure to exciting, innovative approaches to international development. The selected applicant will serve as a senior manager for the firm’s growing business opportunities in areas including:

  • SME development
  • Value chain development
  • Agriculture and agribusiness
  • Corporate strategy and product marketing
  • Market linkages
  • Enterprise, sector, and national competitiveness enhancement
  • Investment promotion
  • Export development
  • Workforce development
  • Trade policy and trade capacity building
  • Natural resources management
  • Local and community development

In the role of LAC Senior Manager, the selected applicant would also be responsible for:

  • Technical and financial oversight of projects in the LAC region
  • Implementation of short-term technical consulting assignments overseas
  • Leadership and/or contribution in the preparation of new business proposals
  • Management, training and mentoring of staff

Minimum Qualifications requirements for LAC Senior Manager:

  • In-depth familiarity with USAID required; at least 3 years managing USAID-funded programs preferred.
  • At least 5 years progressive project management experience required.
  • At least 5 years of progressive work experience in international development required and emphasis on economic development preferred.
  •    Prior successful experience leading or significantly contributing to winning proposals.

 Other Qualifications:

  • Willingness to travel approximately 30% of the time
  • Experience working or living in the LAC region strongly preferred
  • Cultural understanding and overseas experience required.
  • Strong writing, quantitative, and research skills
  • Strong organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, prioritize work, and handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, verbal and written, required
  • U.S. work authorization required
  • MA/MS degree required, in related areas.

 Position #2: Agribusiness and Food Security Practice Leader               Location: Arlington, VA (with 30% travel)

 CARANA is seeking a well-organized, highly motivated candidate to provide leadership for its Agribusiness and Food Security Practice. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Agribusiness and Food Security Practice Leader will:

1.       Provide intellectual leadership, technical input and management support for CARANA’s agribusiness and food security projects,

2.       Lead CARANA’s development of a competitive agribusiness and food security practice area, which leverages the firm’s overall economic growth experience in agribusiness, food security, transport and logistics and value chain development.

3.       Represent CARANA in knowledge sharing of food security and agricultural innovations and best practices in forums and through special studies that document lessons-learned.

4.       Lead CARANA’s new business efforts in agribusiness, agriculture and food security.

5.       Lead technical assignments and provide critical comments and in-depth analysis to identify constraints in the farm to market supply chain. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 10 years’ experience with USAID, USDA, WFP and/or other multilateral donor projects and programs, including the Feed the Future Initiative, is required.
  • Understanding of USAID procurement processes and regulations is required.
  • Proficient analytical skills that show understanding of current technical food production and security concepts, including food production and marketing systems, food safety, storage, agricultural finance, and transportation and logistics is required.
  • At least 10 years of progressive work experience in international development is required.
  • Significant contribution to winning proposal preparation is required.
  • Strong writing, quantitative, and research skills
  • Strong organizational, communications, marketing and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, prioritize work, and handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  • Fluency in English and one other foreign language desirable
  • Cultural understanding and overseas experience in developing countries is highly desirable
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30% of the time
  • U.S. work authorization required
  • Advanced degree required, in a discipline related to agribusiness, food production, food security, and poverty reduction
