Protecting Yourself From Workplace Violence

Workplace Violence Scenarios

Angry or hostile customer or co-worker
Stay calm, and listen attentively.
Maintain eye contact.
Be courteous, and patient.
Keep the situation in your control.

Person shouting, swearing, and threatening
Signal co-worker or supervisor that you need help.
Do not make any calls yourself.
Have someone call Trinity DPS ( 202-884-9111)

Threatening with a gun, knife,  or other weapon
Stay calm, quietly signal for help.
Maintain eye contact.
Stall for time.
Keep talking-but follow instructions from the person who has the weapon.
Don’t risk harm to yourself or others.
Never try to grab the weapon from the subject.
Watch for a possible chance to safely escape to a safe area.

How to report incidents:

The first time threatened, no matter how “minor”, immediately report it to your supervisor and then call Trinity DPS.  Incidents of threats or violence should be reported before they lead to a life-endangering situation.

How can employees protect themselves?

  • Learn how to recognize, avoid, or diffuse potentially violent situations by attending personal safety training programs.
  • Alert supervisors to any concerns about safety or security and report all incidents immediately.
  • Avoid traveling alone into unfamiliar locations or situations whenever possible.
  •  Carry only minimal amounts of cash and required identification into community settings.

Workplace Violence Prevention Agencies

  • The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health: 1-800-35-NIOSH (4674). NIOSH provides informational research about to prevent workplace violence based on the research of the Center For Disease Control, its parent agency.
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA): 202-693-1888. OSHA enforces Federal workplace Safety and Occupational Health Laws.
  • File a complaint with OSHA by phone, report an emergency, or request OSHA advice:
