Sisters of Notre Dame Join Trinity’s Faculty!

Among many exciting new faculty appointments this fall, I am so pleased to announce the appointment of two exceptional scholars who are also Sisters of Notre Dame:  Sister Camilla Burns, SND and Sr. Mary Johnson, SND both join the faculty as Distinguished Professors:

  • Dr. Camilla Burns, S.N.D., Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies

Sr. Burns was congregational leader of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur from 2002 to 2008.  She comes most recently from Liverpool Hope University where she was professor of Biblical Studies.  Previously, she was director of the Institute for Pastoral Studies at Loyola University in Chicago and associate professor of Biblical Studies.  She is a Trinity alumna, earning her A.B. in Physics and Mathematics at Trinity, and then her M.S. in Chemistry at the University of Notre Dame.  She earned a second M.A. at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.  She earned her Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.

  • Dr. Mary Johnson, S.N.D., Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies and Sociology

Sr. Johnson is on leave from Emmanuel College where she is a tenured professor of Sociology and Religious Studies.  A highly regarded scholar in the field of young adults and religion, she is in Washington conducting research as a senior fellow with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.  A former member of Trinity’s Board of Trustees, including a term as vice chair, Sr. Johnson earned her B.A. cum laude at Emmanuel College, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Please join me in welcoming all new faculty to Trinity!

Sr. Camilla, I am delighted to have finally caught up with you. It looks like you and Mary Johnson will be quite the spiritual force to reckon with. Love it. I can never thank you enough for the profound influence you have had on my life from St. Joe’s to Loyola. I have taken a sabbatical from 30 years of being a DRE and am working on Cerification as a Spiritual Director thru the Haden Institute and will be ordained as an Interfaith Minister through the Tree of Life School of Sacred Living in New Hampshire on June 20th. I ask for your prayers and always be assured of mine as well.

I’m trying to get in touch with Sister Mary Hayes, SND in Washington, DC. Sister Mary is an Historian who travels to Paris in her studies. I knew her brother, Michael who passed on, March 28, 2014. Thank you, Ellen
