On this Memorial Day 2011, with American troops still fighting and dying in the nation’s now-longest war in Afghanistan, let us remember all those veterans who gave so much to defend our nation.
We honor them by doing our part here at home to keep the ideals of this democracy strong. Our active, thoughtful, respectful participation in all dimensions of the political process and civic discourse is the best way we can show our gratitude to those who devoted their lives to the nation’s defense.
We can also honor them by reinforcing our commitment to make the United States a force for peace throughout the world. We must start by insisting that our political leaders get serious about bringing our troops home, ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and finding more peaceful means of ensuring national security and international stability.
