Leaders for the Next Generation

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

students-large.jpgLast Friday, I had the privilege of sitting in on a focus group conducted by students in Dr. Shelley Tomkin's seminar on public opinion polling. What a great affirmation of Trinity's mission in women's leadership development! The students organized a highly disciplined and effective session in which other students, faculty and staff answered a series of students-3-large.jpgquestions about current politics. I will not go into the details here since the actual report will come from the class and I don't want to pre-empt their fine work. But I do want to share a few observations. Full Article

Pink Mitts and Playing Hardball

mitt-1-large.jpg

So, it's come to this. Pink baseball mitts for the female T-ball set. No dirty-boy-rawhide for these delicate creatures. My shopping cart screeched to a halt at Target this morning as I was prowling for detergent. The screaming display of pink baseball mitts and pink bats and pink balls and pink lacrosse sticks and other pink sports items gave new meaning to "Playing Like A Girl."

So, of course, I had to have one! I immediately purchased my own pink mitt. I've spent the rest of the morning pondering this very strange gender-bending item that now sits on my desk.

Faculty Salute: Dr. Sharon Shafer

Sunday, March 30, 2008

sharon-2-small.jpgOn Wednesday, March 26, many students, faculty, staff, alumnae and friends — andsharon-small.jpg numerous faculty emeritae as well — gathered in O'Connor Auditorium to celebrate with and offer congratulations to Dr. Sharon Shafer on the occasion of her "Farewell Concert" — a phrase that none of us likes or can quite believe, and rest assured we'll try to convince Dr. Shafer to do many encores! But Dr. Shafer is retiring after 35 years of bringing the incomparable joy of music into the lives of generations of students and alumnae, as well as the large Trinity community. In her inimitable creative style, she offered this concert including her new song cycle IN PARADISUM as her way of saying farewell to her years on the faculty. Full Article

Woman Spurned

Monday, March 10, 2008

Grief

There she is again.

That woman of a certain style, graceful hair sweeping around her face with the downcast eyes.

That woman standing in sorrow and pain next to the powerful man who juts out his jaw and spits out an apology and then strides away in angry remorse.

The woman he spurned for the pleasure of someone else, something else, something illicit, illegal, ill.

The powerful man who has just lost everything because he cannot control himself.

The sorrowful woman who stands by her man.
