Safely in Fearful Times
October 20, 2002
President Patricia McGuire
Dear students, faculty, staff and friends in the Trinity Community,
As we all know, these are fearful times, and it's very hard
to know what may happen at any given moment. I have recently
received some questions about Trinity's activities in light
of the sniper situation. Like the challenges we have unfortunately
had to face in the last year as a result of terrorism and the
anthrax episode, we remain determined not to let the disordered
mind deter us from our educational mission.
We do not believe it is necessary to stop any of Trinity's
normal activities at this time. We are monitoring the situation
continuously, and we will, of course, take immediate precautions
if the situation changes in this area. We urge you to be careful
in your travels to and from campus, and in your daily activities
at home. Beyond such urging, and beyond taking a stance of extra
vigilance in watching the campus perimeter, we do not believe
that any restrain on our activities is warranted.
We also must remember, in the midst of this very sad situation,
that street crime remains a constant threat to everyone's health
and well being in the city. Please be vigilant at all times,
avoid walking alone on Michigan Avenue especially after dark,
and let us know immediately if you see anyone or anything that
looks suspicious.
Let us pray for the victims and their families, and for the
restoration of a sense of peace and security to our region.
