Credit and non-credit internships

Internships can be taken for credit or no credit.  All internships provide opportunities for students to participate in a field-based, hands-on learning experience.   Internships taken for credit involve both academic assignments and on-site work responsibilities; students must report to a faculty supervisor and fulfill academic requirements in order to receive course credit.  Internship requirements are specified in the Internship Learning Agreement.  The Internship Learning Agreement must be completed by the student, signed by the on-site supervisor, and approved by the faculty supervisor.

Benefits of internships

        teach students valuable work skills

provide students with professional contacts for post-college employment

help students gain experience in their chosen professional field

allow students to apply theories learned in a classroom

Internship requirements and registration procedures

Before enrolling in an internship, a student must consult with the faculty member responsible for supervising internships for the relevant program.  The faculty supervisor and the student will discuss internship requirements and review the Internship Learning Agreement form.  With the faculty supervisor’s approval, the student may then register for an internship course.  The student is responsible for seeking out and arranging the internship, with the assistance of the Office of Career Services, faculty, alumnae, and personal and/or professional contacts.   The Internship Learning Agreement must be completed, signed by all parties, and submitted to the Director of Career Services  before the end of the schedule adjustment period. If a student registers for an internship but fails to turn in the Internship Learning Agreement by the deadline, the course will be dropped from the student’s schedule UNLESS the student submits a written extension request, with the faculty supervisor’s approval, before the end of the schedule adjustment period.
