Tuesday, August 24, 2010 Trinity welcomed more than 350 new freshmen and transfer students into the College of Arts and Sciences and today they signed the Honor Pledge, a Trinity tradition that has endured for more than a century. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 Freshmen across the country are getting advice during orientation about staying healthy and fit in college, but only freshmen at Trinity Washington University heard tips from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius '70, the nation's highest ranking health official, who returned to her alma mater to talk about health, health care reform and lessons in leadership. Her keynote address was preceded by remarks given by Dr. Nicole Lang '89, who founded her own medical practice, Washington Pediatrics Associates, and is a member of the Trinity Board of Trustees. Sydney Cross
Sydney Cross, a member of the Green Class of 2010, has been selected as one of twenty recipients of the prestigious Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, this highly-competitive fellowship provides both scholarship funding and internship experience for young people to pursue a career in the U.S. Foreign Service. The Rangel Fellowship provides up to $28,000 annually for tuition, room, board and a stipend for a two-year master's degree in international affairs; each fellow is then assigned a three-year appointment as a Foreign Service Officer. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 Trinity President Patricia McGuire will receive the Alexander Meiklejohn Award for Academic Freedom from the American Association of University Professors on June 12 at the AAUP's annual meeting. This is the AAUP's most prestigious award and is given to an American college or university administrator in recognition of an outstanding contribution to academic freedom during the preceding year. President McGuire was selected for this award for her 2009 Commencement remarks at Trinity, in which she denounced the "religious vigilantism" of those who opposed President Barack Obama's Commencement address at the University of Notre Dame, and defended the principle of academic freedom. Monday, May 3, 2010 President McGuire announced that the 2010 Commencement speaker at Trinity Washington University will be Argelia Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of the District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP). Full Article
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 President Patricia McGuire was presented with a ceremonial resolution by the D.C. Council today for her exemplary leadership of Trinity for more than 20 years. The resolution was proposed by Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas and unanimously approved by the D.C. Council. Full Article
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 Trinity Washington University and the National Catholic Reporter are co-sponsoring “A Washington Briefing for the Nation's Catholic Community,” on Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7, 2010. Friday, February 12, 2010 The U.S. Senate has confirmed two Trinity alumnae, M. Patricia Smith '74 and Ellen Gloninger Murray '70, to serve in top posts in the administration of President Barack Obama. Smith was confirmed by the Senate on February 4 to serve as Solicitor of the U.S. Department of Labor, the third highest position in the department. Murray was confirmed on February 11 by the Senate to serve as Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Full Article
Friday, February 5, 2010 Dr. Robert Maguire, associate professor of international affairs, director of the Haiti Project at Trinity and chair of the Haiti Working Group at the U.S. Institute of Peace presented testimony before the Subcommittee on International Development, Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs and International Environmental Protection of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, on February 4, 2010, about rebuilding Haiti in the wake of the tragic earthquake in January. Thursday, February 4, 2010 President Patricia McGuire authored an article for the January/February 2010 issue of Trusteeship magazine, published by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. In her article, “Measuring Success for the Real Majority in Higher Education Today,” she calls attention to the fact that U.S. Department of Education studies reveal that almost 75 percent of college students today are “non-traditional.” Yet, most conversation in government and policy circles still assumes nearly all students are full-time, traditional undergraduates. Dr. Robert Maguire
Dr. Robert Maguire, associate professor of international affairs, director of the Haiti Project at Trinity and chair of the Haiti Working Group at the U.S. Institute of Peace, co-authored an op-ed about the future of Haiti that was published in the Los Angeles Times on January 31, 2010. In "To Rebuild Haiti, Start With Its Young People," Maguire and Robert Muggah propose a 700,000-strong national civic service corps to harness untapped labor rapidly and instill national pride and confidence. Maguire, a nationally and internationally recognized expert on Haiti, who has worked to improve the economic strength of the nation for more than 30 years, has been interviewed by dozens of media organizations across the country and around the world since the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January. Sunday, January 31, 2010 Trinity graduate Alice Boyle Duffy ’51 recently made her debut on Broadway (at the young age of 81!) in Noel Coward’s play “Present Laughter,” with Victor Garber in the lead. Duffy reflected on her journey to Broadway in an interview with NBC reporter Ann Thompson that aired on the Today Show on January 27 and on the NBC Evening News on January 30. Full Article
