Friday, February 12, 2010 The U.S. Senate has confirmed two Trinity alumnae, M. Patricia Smith '74 and Ellen Gloninger Murray '70, to serve in top posts in the administration of President Barack Obama. Smith was confirmed by the Senate on February 4 to serve as Solicitor of the U.S. Department of Labor, the third highest position in the department. Murray was confirmed on February 11 by the Senate to serve as Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Full Article
Thursday, November 12, 2009 Veronica Nolan '99, executive director of Urban Alliance in Washington, D.C., has been named a Rising Star in the 2009 Women Who Mean Business Awards presented by the Washington Business Journal. Trinity graduate Philonda Johnson '05, founding principal of the KIPP DC: Discover Academy, will be the featured speaker at Cap and Gown Convocation on Saturday, September 26, at 5:00 pm in the Trinity Center. She will be presented with the Trinity Washington Woman of Genius Award. Johnson is the youngest person to serve as a principal of a KIPP school. The KIPP DC: Discover Academy in Ward 8 in Southeast Washington, D.C., is a college-preparatory early childhood school serving 100 pre-kindergarten students; the school will grow to capacity to serve 280 students in grades pre-school through kindergarten.
