Girl Scouts Honor President McGuire
President Patricia McGuire and Trinity College received the Officers'
Award from the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital at the President's
Circle Dinner in March. The Officers' Award honors outstanding organizations,
and the leaders of those organizations, for their contributions to the
Girl Scout Council. This marks only the fifth time that this distinguished
honor has been awarded.
President McGuire has been involved with the Girl Scout Council in a variety
of significant ways. She has served on the Cultivation Committee for the
Girl Scout's Capital Campaign, hosted the Council's Wider Opportunity
program, been a keynote speaker for the girlsandwomen.connect program,
participated in the Women's Advisory Board, hosted dinners for the Council's
"Dine Around" series, and has participated in the Girl Scout's
popular Camp CEO program, where women executives attend camp with area
Girl Scouts - sharing s'mores and leadership advice.
Trinity College has had a partnership with the Girl Scout Council of the
Nation's Capital for more than a decade. Trinity is a cosponsor of girlsandwomen.connect,
which pairs women business leaders with Girl Scouts and offers a series
of interactive programs. The Washington Business Journal, Washington Mystics
and the Calvert Group are also cosponsors of the program. In Spring of
2002, Trinity established a scholarship program that awards $5,000 to
Gold Award Girl Scouts, and makes scholarships available to all Girl Scouts
and their leaders. Trinity has hosted a number of Girl Scout programs,
including the Soy Unica, Soy Latina Festival in the fall and Wider Opportunity,
a week-long summer enrichment program; and provided housing to Girl Scouts
who participated in the 90th Anniversary Sing-Along on the Mall.
"Our relationship with Trinity over the past 10 years exemplifies
the very best in 'partnership,' said Donnella Brockington, president of
the Girl Scout Council.
"President McGuire has always been our most enthusiastic and energetic
supporter. It is hard to imagine Girl Scouting in the Nation's Capital
without Pat McGuire
. and without Trinity College." She added,
"Trinity's scholarship program for Girl Scouts is making dreams of
education come true for many of our members. There is no greater gift."
The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital has more than 71,000 members
in the Washington area, making it one of the largest councils in the nation.
Trinity Hosts Catholic School on Campus
This fall, the sounds of children playing hopscotch, jumping rope and
practicing multiplication tables will be heard, as Trinity welcomes the
students of Immaculate Conception Catholic School to campus while their
school is being renovated.
Immaculate Conception is part of the Archdiocese of Washington's Center
City Consortium, a group of 13 inner-city Catholic schools. The Center
City Consortium is the cornerstone of the Archdiocese's "Faith in
the City" initiative, which seeks to stabilize and revitalize the
inner-city Catholic schools located in the neediest neighborhoods of Washington,
D.C. The Consortium is committed to turning these schools into nationally
recognized centers of excellence that demonstrate what Catholic schools
can and do accomplish in inner cities across the United States.
Immaculate Conception educates about 130 students, pre-K through 5th grade,
and also offers before- and after-school care. Classrooms are being created
to accommodate the new students in the lower level of Alumnae Hall, Cuvilly
Hall, and the Library. Immaculate Conception plans to be at Trinity during
the 2003-04 academic year, while the school is being completely renovated.
Mary
Anne Stanton '90, executive director of the Consortium, is thrilled with
the arrangement. "I think this is such an exciting partnership,"
she said. "I know that this will be a wonderful learning experience
for all of us. Exposing young kids to college this way will make a very
positive impression on them."
"Trinity works with and reaches out to the Archdiocese of Washington
and other dioceses in many ways," said President Patricia McGuire.
"This is a special opportunity to extend our commitment to Catholic
education, and to the young people of this city," she added. "When
the Archdiocese needed space for one of its schools, Mary Anne knew that
she could turn to Trinity for support. We are delighted to welcome the
students of Immaculate Conception to campus."
Trinity also hosts the annual "Faith in the City" family fun
festival in the spring in the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports.
