Washington .... Sr. Ann Kendrick, SND, '66, co-founder of the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka, Florida, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the 101st Commencement at Trinity College on Sunday, May 23. In her Commencement remarks to the graduates, she encouraged them to "Always stay curious about one another. Seek out the ones who experience life differently. Listen without judgment. Be the ones in your community who engage in life." Kendrick was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws.
More than 350 bachelor's and master's degrees were awarded at Trinity's Commencement, at which more than 3,500 people gathered. The first class to graduate from Trinity's new MBA program received their degrees at Sunday's Commencement ceremony, and Trinity awarded bachelor's degrees for the first time to two men.
Peggy Hoffman O'Brien, Chair of the Board of Trustees, called Sr. Ann Kendrick's mother from the podium so that she could hear her daughter's remarks. The graduates gave Kendrick a standing ovation after her remarks.
More than 30 years ago, Kendrick and several other SNDs founded the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka near Orlando, in the fields where migrant workers and their families tend to the crops that fill many American plates. Over the years, the Farmworker Ministry has grown to become a major social service center including a health clinic, credit union, legal and advocacy services, and a broad range of other services for Florida 's agricultural workers. Today, working through the Notre Dame Americorps, she is now focusing on efforts to reduce the high school dropout rate.
After Kendrick's remarks, President McGuire announced the establishment of a new scholarship program to assist students from the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka who want to study here at Trinity. "We will call these students the Kendrick Scholars in honor of Ann."
