Sr. Ann Kendrick '66 to Speak at Commencement

Sr. Ann Kendrick (right)Sr. Ann Kendrick, SND, '66, co-founder of the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka, Florida, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the 101st Commencement at Trinity on Sunday, May 23. She will also present the Commencement address to the graduates.

More than 350 bachelor's and master's degrees will be awarded at Trinity's Commencement.

Kendrick, who is president of the Class of 1966, decided after she graduated from Trinity to join the Sisters of Notre Dame and to work in their ministry to the poor. More than 30 years ago, Kendrick and several other SNDs founded the Farmworker Ministry in Apopka near Orlando, in the fields where migrant workers and their families tend to the crops that fill many American plates. Over the years, the Farmworker Ministry has grown to become a major social service center including a health clinic, credit union, legal and advocacy services, and a broad range of other services for Florida's agricultural workers. Today, working through the Notre Dame Americorps, she is now focusing on efforts to reduce the high school dropout rate.

"Since this year is the Bicentennial of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur," said President Patricia McGuire, "we felt it would be particularly appropriate to salute the SNDs by honoring one SND whose lifetime of service and commitment truly exemplifies the mission of St. Julie Billiart as well as the values of Trinity College."
In September 2003, Good Housekeeping magazine profiled Sr. Ann Kendrick, noting that she, with three other sisters, "has transformed the lives of countless disadvantaged seasonal workers and their families in the agricultural community."
Commencement will be held on the steps of the Trinity Library at 11:00 a.m.. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports.
