"Justice will not come until those who are not injured are just as outraged as those who are." (Solon) From her earliest days at Trinity, Jeanette Jackson Clark has exemplified this admonition of the Greek philosopher Solon. Invested in April of this year as an associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, Judge Clark has lived Trinity's ideals of honor and justice. A history major during the late 1960's, she earned the trust and respect of the Class of 1970, and was elected as senior class president. She chose teaching as her first career, earning a master's in Education at Wheelock College and then teaching in the D.C. Public Schools and later at Sidwell Friends. But the call of justice was clear, and she soon applied her keen intellect to the study of law at Howard University. Upon admission to the bar she practiced with Steptoe and Johnson before joining the general counsel's office of the Washington Metropolitan Transportation Authority. As she rose through the ranks she never forgot Trinity, serving alma mater well not only as class president but also for six years as a member of our Board of Trustees. Now, as a Superior Court judge, she will demonstrate anew her intelligence and compassion, grace and deep sense of justice.

For her devotion to Trinity's highest ideals of justice and honor, the president and trustees of Trinity College are pleased to bestow on Jeanette Jackson Clark the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

Honorary Degree Citation: Sr. Mary Ann Cook

Professor of English, academic dean, chair of the Board of Trustees: Sister Mary Ann Cook has held many titles during her distinguished Trinity career, but none so profoundly important to her life or to Trinity's than "Sister of Notre Dame de Namur." She has exemplified the vision of St. Julie Billiart and mission of the SND's through her tireless devotion to the success of the students of Trinity and those whom she leads today as president of Education for Parish Service. A 1960 graduate of Trinity, Sr. Mary Ann earned her M.A. at Catholic University in Middle English Literature, and her Ph.D. at Oxford University in England. She has earned numerous fellowships and honors, including the prestigious American Council on Education Fellowship. She was a member of the Leadership Team for the Maryland Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame. During her twelve years as a member of the Board of Trustees, six as chair, she has played a significant leadership role in the transformation of Trinity College in keeping with the needs of 21st Century education, remembering always the advice of St. Julie to her sisters, to teach their students what they need to know for success in each generation.

For her countless and invaluable gifts of leadership and talent to Trinity, for her example of service to the education of women, the enlargement of faith and the ideals of Notre Dame, the president and trustees of Trinity College are pleased to bestow on Mary Ann Cook, SND, the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.
