| "...investments in women -- and especially in
the education of women and girls -- are the key to sustainable
development and bring the greatest dividends to families,
communities and entire societies..." - United Nations
Secretary General Kofi Annan
"There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the
single most important issue we are dealing with is the enfranchisement
of women...It is so clear that if you do not deal with the
questions of women's education, of women's opportunity and
women's rights, you simply cannot have effective development."
- World Bank President James Wolfensohn
"Teach them what they need to know." -

Globally, more than 65 million girls are not in school at the present
time. Nearly 900 million citizens of the earth are illiterate, and
two-thirds of them are women. Women's lack of education around the
world is a primary factor increasing poverty rates for their children
and families, contributing as well to violence and myriad forms
of oppression.
For 200 years, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have responded
to the global challenge of women's education through establishing
schools, colleges and other ministries whose primary mission has
been the education of women and girls, and the alleviation of poverty
and injustice. The worldwide SND network of educational and social
ministries today provides a powerful platform for developing new
strategies and programmatic initiatives to respond to the ongoing
crisis of women's education globally.
As one of the oldest American ministries of the Sisters of Notre
Dame, Trinity College is pleased to host a symposium designed to
celebrate the heritage of the SNDs through considering new ways
in which the legacy of St. Julie Billiart can be manifest in global
educational initiatives for girls and women in the 21st Century.
Responding to the challenge, and as a symbol of Trinity's gratitude
to the SNDs for their century of service to Trinity, Trinity intends
to launch new educational programs designed to expand Trinity's
historic educational outreach to new populations in the United States
and abroad. In particular, the symposium provides an opportunity
for Trinity and the Sisters of Notre Dame to discuss new forms of
21st Century partnership with SND schools and ministries worldwide,
using both on-site and online learning opportunities, to provide
innovative responses to the global challenge of women's education.
