President McGuire
Participates in Teach for America
October 29, 2004
As
part of “Teach for America Week,” Trinity
President Patricia McGuire taught a class at Gage-Eckington Elementary
School in Washington, DC, to highlight the need to expand educational
opportunity and to inspire students to pursue their life goals through
education. In this effort she joins more than 250 leaders from all
sectors, including: former first lady Barbara Bush, actor Michael
Douglas, Hewlett-Packard chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina, and former
attorney general Janet Reno.
Teach for America Week is the annual nationwide event in which
leaders from all professions spend an hour of their time teaching
children from some of our lowest income communities. Each year,
dozens of politicians, business leaders, athletes, performers, community
activists, and other prominent individuals serve as guest teachers
in the schools where Teach For America corps members teach.

About Teach For America
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding college
graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in
low-income urban and rural communities and become life-long advocates
to expand opportunity for children. Corps members go above and beyond
traditional expectations to impact the lives of children growing
up in low-income communities. Beyond their two years, corps members
take their insight and added commitment to assume leadership roles
from inside education and from every other sector and to work toward
the fundamental changes necessary to provide more equal opportunities
for all children in our nation.
Since Teach For America placed its first 500 corps members in classrooms
in 1990, approximately 12,000 outstanding college graduates have
joined its movement to eliminate educational inequity. By the fall
of 2004, corps members will teach in 22 locations in underserved
communities across the country. For more information on Teach For
America, please visit: www.teachforamerica.org.
