Title IX Rally and Panel Will Kick-Off the Event in Trinity College’s New Athletic Center on Tuesday, February 4

WASHINGTON, D.C... As the landmark legislation Title IX faces potential erosion, Trinity College will host a celebration of female athletes in its new athletic facility, the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports, on Tuesday, February 4. Women’s Sports Foundation founder and tennis champion Billie Jean King, Olympic swimming champion and a member of the Administration’s Title IX Panel Donna de Varona, and more than a dozen women champion and Olympic athletes will celebrate the academic and athletic achievements of D.C. high school girls.

The awards program, on the eve of the 17th Annual National Women and Girls in Sports Day, will honor the top scholar sportswomen in D.C. public and private high schools. Coaches and teams will also be honored.

The celebration of women and girls in sports will kick-off at 4:00 p.m. with a "Rally for Title IX," featuring Trinity students reflecting on the importance of athletics, fitness and team sports. A panel discussion on "The Future of Title IX" at 5:00 p.m. will feature USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, Title IX plaintiff Megan Hull, and Title IX attorney Kristen Galles.

Billie Jean King, Olympic soccer champion and WUSA player Julie Foudy, auto racer Lyn St. James, Olympic champion swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar, Olympic gymnastics champion Dominique Dawes, and WNBA player Nikki McCray, will be among the champion athletes congratulating the D.C. Scholar Sportswomen. This year’s honors include: Scholar Sportswoman of the Year, Public School: Chanel JoAnn Barnes, Eastern High School; Scholar Sportswoman of the Year, Private School: Mary-Pat Kadzik, Georgetown Day High School; Washington Community Action Program Sportswoman of the Year, Physically Challenged Athlete: Esmerelda Lovos, Sharp Health School.

More than 25 D.C. athletes, coaches and teams will be honored; for a complete list, contact Ann Pauley at 202/884-9725. The program will be held in the new Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports, a $20 million, state-of-the-art complex recently opened on the Trinity College campus. The Trinity Center, the largest facility dedicated to women and girls in sports in the nation, includes a basketball arena, six-lane swimming pool and spa, walking track, fitness center, athletic field, and six tennis courts.
