September 11 Observance: Open Classes and Discussion Topics

9:00 am - 10:15 am, Soul Searching: Religion and Identity, Geraldine Noble-Martocci, Main 232

This course will discuss the topic "Identity and Perceptions of Identity After September 11.

10:30 am - 11:45 am, Introduction to Psychology, Dr. Carlota Ocampo, Main 236

The class will address September 11 and work the anniversary into the discussion material. The involvement of the field of psychology in September 11 assessment efforts, with a focus on research and treatment of trauma, will also be part of the class.

10:30 am -11:45 am, Political Futures, Dr. Ira Reed, Main 235

There will be an open discussion of political changes and possible future political developments in light of the events and aftermath of September 11: e.g., homelands security and preparedness measures; changes in civil liberties protections and privacy concerns; the war on terrorism, Afghanistan, Iraq.

Noon - 1:15 pm, Profiles in Political Courage, Dr. Ira Reed, Main 234

Open discussion topic: Have there been examples of political courage as a result of September 11? We all have witnessed the physical and emotional courage of first responders and emergency personnel during the attacks and of the bravery of troops during the war on terrorism, but what of political courage? e.g., Mayor Guliani? President Bush? Others?

12 noon - 1:15 pm, Dr. John Volpe, Main 235

Dr. Volpe will lead a class discussion on the impact of September 11 on the US economy.

1:30 pm - 2:45 pm, Introduction to Mass Communication, Dr. Raul Tovares, Main 235

Dr. Tovares will present material in a globalization and mass media context with references to the events of a year ago.

1:30 pm - 3:30 pm, Experimental Psychology, Dr. Carlota Ocampo, Main 238

This class will address the involvement of the field of psychology in September 11 assessment efforts, with a focus on research and treatment of trauma.

3:00 pm - 4:15 pm, Public Speaking, Dr. Brad Mello, Main 232

Students will examine and analyze a videotaped speech given in response to the attacks. In addition, the text of President Bush's speech that he gave that evening will be analyzed.

4:30 p.m., Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Dr. Sandra Anderson, Main 248.

This class will be discussing "Six Degrees of Separation" - a research study on how connected people are, in the context of "No man is an island". Class discussion will center on how close each of us was to affected individuals in New York and Washington, (degrees of separation) and the impact on each of us.
