How do I change the weekly dates on my course? [Moodle version 2.9]

All courses are created in Moodle with weekly date ranges at the top of each week/section. By default, these weeks begin with the first date of the academic session for that course. So if you are leading a course in the WEEKLY academic session and that session begins on a Tuesday, the weekly dates in Moodle will run from Tuesday to Monday, starting with that first Tuesday of the session.

There are two ways to change these dates. If you would like to simply shift them so that the dates run Monday through Sunday, for instance, you can change the course start date. If you would prefer the weeks to read something like ‘Week 2: Jupiter’s Moons,’ then you can manually override the weekly dates content.

Note: you can click on any image to view a larger version of the image.

To change the dates so the week runs from a different start day of the week:

  1. From the main page of your course, look in the left column. Locate your ‘Administration’ block.
  2. Click on the ‘Edit settings’ link near the top of the ‘Administration’ block.

  3. Then in the top ‘General’ section of the course settings page, just underneath the ‘Visible’ setting, there is a ‘Course start date’ setting. Adjust that date so that the course start begins on the day of the week the you wish the weekly dates to begin.

    1. For instance, instead of Tuesday, January 17th, when this academic session began, you might move the date back to January 16th for a Monday through Sunday week or even January 15th for a Sunday through Saturday week, depending on which you prefer.

  4. Scroll down and click the ‘Save and display’ button to save your changes.
  5. If you haven’t overwritten (i.e., manually changed) any of the weekly dates, the date ranges should all automatically correct themselves to the new weeks.

To change the dates by manually overriding them:

  1. From the main page of your course, turn on the editing capabilities by clicking the ‘Turn editing on’ button in the upper right corner of the page.

  2. Scroll down to the week whose date range you wish to override.
  3. Click on the small gray gear icon just underneath the date range you wish to override.

  4. On the editing screen, you’ll notice that the ‘Section name’ box is currently grayed out. You need to uncheck the box labelled, ‘Use default section name.’

  5. Once unchecked, you can type in the title box.

  6. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the ‘Save changes’ button.
  7. Your section name is now overridden.

You will notice that when you move a section where you have overridden the section name, the name for the section does not change. Whereas if you move a week where you have not overridden the section name, the dates will adjust accordingly.

So if the overridden week, is moved to be the third week instead of the second:

You’ll notice that the ‘January 30 – February 5’ section name became ‘January 23 – January 29,’ but that the overridden section name of ‘Week 2: Jupiter’s Moons’ did not change:

Moodle will continue whichever section is second because based on the course start date set on the setting page and the current date on the computer, this second week space is the active second week of the course.
