How do I access my course files in Moodle (current version)?

 
 

Moodle has two main types of files: your current files and legacy files. Legacy files are those files that were in Moodle 1.9 before the upgrade to version 2.2 in August 2012.

To reach your files (current and legacy) or to add new files, you will go through the “+Add an activity or resource” interface. When you import your course next semester, the only files that will “move forward” would be the ones that are linked as resources in the course. You will not lose any files, as they will be accessible in the pre-upgrade Moodle course.

To add a new file or view your available files:

  1. Login to Moodle.
  2. Click on your current course, in the “My Courses” block in the right column to enter your course.
  3. Turn on the course editing functionality by either:
    1. Clicking the “Turn editing on” button in the upper right corner on your course page.
      -OR-
    2. Clicking the “Turn editing on” link in the Settings block in the left column of your course.
  4. Once editing is on, click the “+Add an activity or resource” link in the week or topic to which you wish to add the file. NOTE: If you simply want to view your files, you still must choose a specific week or topic in which to click the link. I always choose Week 0, in this case.
  5. Scroll down and choose the “File” option from the “RESOURCES” section of the “+Add an activity or resource” pop-up window. NOTE: You must have your pop-up blocker disabled for moodle.trinitydc.edu for Moodle to work properly. Learn how to disable your pop-up blocker here.
  6. Once you have selected the “File” option, click the “Add” button.
  7. On the next screen, called “Adding a new file,” complete the “Name” and, if applicable, “Description” fields for your file.
  8. In the “Content” area, under the “Select files” heading, click the “Add” button.
  9. From the next pop-up window, you can either “Upload a New File” or see your previous files by choosing the “Server Files” option.
  10. To upload a new file:
    1. Click the “Upload a File” link.
    2. In the next screen, click the “Browse” button to navigate to the file are your computer. When you find the file, click on it and then click on the “Open” button.
    3. Rename the file, if you want to, by changing the file name in the “Save As” box.
    4. When you are ready, click the “Upload this File” button.
    5. This will bring you back to your “Adding a New File” screen.
    6. Adjust any of the other settings as you wish, or leave them at their defaults.
    7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click the “Save and Return to Course” or “Save and Display” button.
  11. To view your current files or choose a previously uploaded file:
    1. After you click the “Add” button and the file pop-up window appears, click on the “Server Files” link. NOTE: if you recently uploaded the file, it will be easiest to find it by clicking the “Recent Files” link instead.
    2. The one of the first folders of files in the “Server Files” area should be your “Legacy Course Files.” These are the files that existed in Moodle 1.9 prior to the upgrade. Click on the folder icon and your files will be listed.
    3. Click on the file name.
    4. In the next window, click the “Select this File” button.
    5. This will bring you back to your “Adding a New File” screen.
    6. Adjust any of the other settings as you wish, or leave them at their defaults.
    7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click the “Save and Return to Course” or “Save and Display” button.

It is good to note that you can do a number of things to this file once it is listed on the “Adding a New File” screen. If you click the gray “cog wheel” icon, you can:

  • Download the file.
  • Rename the file.
  • Move the file.
  • Delete the file.
  • Set one file to be the “main” file, if you have created a folder of files.
