Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild
The Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild (FMGG) frequently needs volunteers to work in its organic garden. Come help mulch, weed, plant seeds, and harvest vegetables in this serene setting not far from the Brookland metro stop. The Franciscan Monastery isFranciscan Garden Guild located at 1400 Quincy Street, NE.  There is a parking lot (no charge) on the corner of 14th & Quincy Streets, NE which is across the street from the Monastery’s entrance.  The closest Metro station is via the Red Line’s Brookland/Catholic University of America (CUA).  Upon arrival, please either transfer to the H6 bus – direction “Fort Lincoln” and disembark at 14th & Quincy Streets, NE or walk up hill on Newton Street, NE to 14th Street, NE and turn left for 14th & Quincy Streets NE (approximately 15 walk).

Upon arrival, ask the Monastery’s security guard for directions to the greenhouse in the back behind the Monastery’s Gift Shop. For more information, contact the head gardener Lou Maroulis.

Martha’s Table
Participate in one of Martha’s Tables’ many projects: Food Wrap-up Program, Baker’s Enthusiast, Martha’s Markets, and McKenna’s Wagon. Trinity students have logged many hours at Martha’s Table!  Contact Francisca Alba for information. Register at the volunteer website.

SOME (So Others Might Eat)
SOME has been serving the poor and homeless in our community for 45 years. Saturday morning breakfast serves over 200 people, so take the 80 Bus and join in the service crew, 6:30-9:15 am.  First, however , visit the website and register under the username cmattrinity. Prior registration is required.  You will receive orientation, an apron and a nametag upon entering.

Tutoring and Mentoring Youth

Higher Achievement
Tutoring and mentoring middle school youth so that they can prepare for college. This organization had a great presentation at our Student Involvement and Service Fair last fall! Contact: Stephanie Holzinger.

Playtime Project
playtimeVolunteer to tutor and play with children in homeless shelters, and/or come in groups to clean the playrooms. Single student volunteers make a six-month, two-hour-per-week commitment for tutoring and playing. Large groups, like clubs, for example, can participate in the  Adopt a Playroom program: “help us maintain safe playrooms by cleaning and organizing our spaces and sanitizing toys. This opportunity involves flexibility in scheduling a date and ability to choose a weekday or weekend to complete the cleaning. Recommended for groups of about 10 volunteers.” For more information about single or group volunteering, contact Ms. Julie .

Reading partnersReading Partners
Volunteer in low-income schools to help students master essential reading skills. This is a long-term commitment. Location: Noyes Education Campus, 2725 10th street NE DC. Point of contact: Rachel Woods
