     Databases

Gender Watch - focuses on how gender impacts broad subjects areas and offers an historical perspective on women's movement and gender roles.  It includes scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, books, as well as NGO, government and special reports.

CQ Electronic Library - offers access to CQ Public Affairs (public policy topics with historic documents and primary source material), CQ Supreme Court (featuring analyses and commentary on decisions, biographical information on the Justices, court history), and CQ Researcher (complete source for in-depth analysis on current and controversial issues). Currently available only on campus; shortly to be accessible off-campus.

Lexis-Nexis - Academic Universe provides full-text of many newspapers as well as full-text of legal and political research. Statistical Universe is an excellent source of statistical information (log-in required for off-campus access).

ProQuest Research Library - full-text articles and citations to articles relevant to many subjects including political science (log-in required for off-campus access).

   Elections

Center for Voting and Democracy - a non-partisan, non-profit group established in 1992 to cover fair voting procedures. Aims to study "how voting systems affect participation, representation and governance." Offers explanations for different kinds of voting systems (e.g. proportional representation), voting issues such as redistricting and other voting-related issues. Covers all 50 states.

CNN: America Votes 2004 - ""Follow the path of the 2004 presidential primary race with this site's information on the current candidates; their positions on topics such as civil rights, healthcare, international policy, and the environment; and their battle for campaign contributions. It also provides a monthly poll tracker, a description of the primary process by state, an election calendar, and timeline."

DemocracyNet - features information on candidates and their positions on various issues. Coverage is national (U.S.). From the League of Women Voters.

Political WebInfo - offers an overview of all the candidates for the Democratic and Republic candidates for president with links to their various websites (e.g. main sites, blogs, comparative sites). Also features campaign ads, campaign finance information, endorsements, issues, speeches, links for volunteering or participating and much more.

Project Vote-Smart - provides information on government and politics including information on voting records, issue briefs, ballot measures, bill tracking, etc. Includes a Young Voter Program.

Washington Post - Comparing the Candidates - provides brief biographical information on the Democratic candidates for president and gives an overview of their positions on various subjects including civil liberties, the economy, education, energy, foreign policy, health care, security, and Iraq.

   Government Resources

FirstGov - official U.S. government portal to millions of pages of government information and services with links to many resources. Searchable.

GPO - Government Printing Office. Offers full-text access to major publications, reports, documents, etc. published by the federal government. Features the full-text of congressional reports including the Report of the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001.

NARA - National Archives and Records Administration provides full-text historical documents (e.g. Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights), World War II posters, and research guides.

Our Documents - "100 milestone documents of American history. These documents reflect our diversity and our unity, our past and our future, and mostly our commitment as a nation to continue to strive to 'form a more perfect union." Includes the Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, the Treaty of Paris, the Federalist Papers, and many more.

Student Gateway to the U.S. Government - offers information on student loans, internship and employment opportunities, financial aid, college and graduate school information, research information on the government and much more.

THOMAS - provides full-text summaries of bills, resolutions, links to references in the Congressional Record. Includes full-text of public laws. Users can search by subject, topic, bill number, bill type or bills enacted.

U.S. Census - official website of the U.S. Census Bureau. Full census information, including recent census data.

U.S. Courts - access federal courts including information on the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, and District Courts, with additional information on the courts themselves (e.g. judges, court fees, frequently asked questions, statistical reports, etc.). Also features an Educational Outreach "designed to assist educators in teaching about the federal court system in ways that are relevant to state standards and the requirements of the evolving Comprehensive Social Studies Assessment Project" which include classroom resources and lesson plans.

U.S. House of Representatives - provides congressional schedules, links to representatives and committees, committee hearing schedules, roll call votes, floor reports. Also provides information on the legislative process.

U.S. Senate - offers legislative schedules, links to committees and information on Senators.

U.S. Stats - federal Department of Commerce website with information on the U.S. business, economic and trade communities.

The White House - the official site of the White House, offers current information on news, government policies, appointment/nomination information, links to speeches, and more.

   Human Rights Information

Amnesty International - information on human rights. Offers information on human rights issues, treaties, etc. as well as country comparisons.

Avalon Project: Documents in Law, History and Diplomacy - international in scope and features primary source documents from the pre-18th century and the 18th century through to the 21st century. Includes case law, treaties and international agreements, charters, constitutions and much more. Searchable and a very rich resource. From Yale Law School. Features Project DIANA: An Online Human Rights Archive which features human rights cases and the full-text of primary human rights documents.

Human Rights Library - from the University of Minnesota Library. Comprehensive collection of numerous documents relating to human rights issues.

Women's Human Rights Resources - from the Law Library at the University of Toronto. An extensive collection of documents and and resource page on issues relating to women and human rights. Worth exploring as it includes journal article citations, full-text documents, fact sheets, research guides and much, much more.

   International Organizations

European Union (EU) - links to EU official documents, information sources, statistics and member countries. Multilingual.

Organization of American States (OAS) - links to publications and issues of interest to OAS member states. Multilingual.

United Nations (UN) - links and information on UN bodies, committees, annual reports, areas of work and numerous publications. Multilingual.

   Non-Government Resources

Center for American Women and Politics - from Rutgers University. Offers current and historical information about women officeholders and candidates, data on voting patterns, gender gaps, analysis of media coverage and more.

Government Guide: Government Made Easy - offers a zip code directory to your elected officials and their voting record; provides information on current issues; features a Citizen Activist Center where visitors can easily write to their representatives, use online tools for lobbying, and get advice plus much more.

Google Uncle Sam - part of the Google search engine, this limits searches to U.S. Government-hosted pages (sites with either .gov or .mil suffixes).

Supreme Court Historical Society - features history of the court, an overview of how the court works, learning center for students, and information on researching the court.

University of Michigan Documents Center - central reference and referral point for government information, whether local, state, federal, or international.

Women in Politics Bibliographic Database - searchable site with bibliographic references on books and articles dealing with women in politics.

   Political Parties

Democratic National Committee - links to platforms and issues, voter outreach information to increase political participation, news, voter registration, job boards, and much more. In English and Spanish.

Green Party - links to issues and platforms, enumerates ten key values, newsletters, press releases, information on elections and activism, voter registration, and much more. English and Spanish.

Libertarian Party - links to action center, news and events, information on the party, issues and positions, campaigns, and more.

Natural Law Party - links to platforms, candidate information, news and events, information on the party, and more.

Reform Party - information on founding principles, mission statement, platform, pressroom, news releases, candidate information, and more.

Republican National Committee - links to key issues, White House news, news and information, national and state party information and more. In English and Spanish.

American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library - "is a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States." Features over 7 million digital items including multimedia formats, documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text highlighting important American historical events. From the Library of Congress.

EuroDocs: Primary Historical Documents from Western Europe - provides links to Western European (mainly primary) historical documents, organized by country and period. By Richard Hacken, European Studies Bibliographer at Brigham Young University.

War Crime Material - features primary materials on War Crimes and from War Crime trials, information on tribunals, and courts, articles on Kosovo, genocide, research guides, and human rights links. Rich resource from the New England School of Law.

   Women's Studies

Center for American Women and Politics - from Rutgers University. Offers current and historical information about women officeholders and candidates, data on voting patterns, gender gaps, analysis of media coverage and more.

Congresswomen's Biographies - "contains a brief biography of all women who have served or are currently serving in the House of Representatives." Visitors can browse the list chronologically or by name or state and features links to current members' web pages.

League of Women Voters - "encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy." Site features an e-library with publications, newsletters, video archives, historical documents, an image archive, and much more.

National Women's Law Center - worked since "1972 to protect and advance the progress of women and girls at work, in school, and in virtually every aspect of their lives." Offers publications, briefings, press releases, etc. on diverse issues including athletics, child & family support, education, employment, health, etc. Also offers internship opportunities.

Nobel Prize Winners - scroll down page to see a list of women who have won the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Women's Human Rights Resources - from the Law Library at the University of Toronto. An extensive collection of documents and and resource page on issues relating to women and human rights.

Women in the Senate - features links to biographical information on the thirty-three women who have served in the U.S. Senate, including the current fourteen members.
