  Databases

Gender Watch - focuses on how gender impacts broad subjects areas and offers an historical perspective on women's movement and gender roles.  It includes scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, books, as well as NGO, government and special reports.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Academic Universe provides full-text of many newspapers.

ProQuest Research Library - full-text articles and citations to articles relevant to many subjects including music and arts (log-in required for off-campus access).

General Music Resources

African American Sheet Music - over "1,305 pieces of African-American sheet music dating from 1850 through 1920. The collection includes many songs from the heyday of antebellum black face minstrelsy in the 1850s and from the abolitionist movement of the same period... African-American popular composers include James Bland, Ernest Hogan, Bob Cole, James Reese Europe, and Will Marion Cook. From the American Memory Collection of the Library of Congress.

Andante - major site devoted to classical music. The reference section includes a searchable bibliography of thousands of compositions as well as the Concise Grove Dictionary of Music and discographies. Also offers articles on classical music from the New York Review of Books.

Classical Music Navigator - feature a library of notable works, index of forms and styles of music, and much more. Features over 440 musicians.

Essentials of Music - site for basic information on classical music. Offers information on eras, composers and includes a glossary.

Honky Tonks: Hymns & the Blues - honky tonks "sprang up around east Texas oil fields in the 1930s" and this site features audio archives of NPR's Morning Edition 12-part program outlining the history and major artists (men and women) of the genre. Audio clips of songs included.

International Alliance for Women in Music - a resource on women composers and women in music topics. This community archive is developed and maintained by members of the IAWM and contains more than 4500 pages of archival resources.

Rockin Rina's Women of 1970's Punk - search or browse by band name. Information includes discography and some have real audio sound clips as well as links to other related sites.

Sweet Adelines International - "one of the largest women singers’ organizations in the world, committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance." Site features information on membership, directories of members, competition information, publications, press releases, music links, and much more.

Women Composers - directory listing of the names, dates and countries of origin of many women composers with links to web sites, where available.

Womenrock.com - created by musician Brenda Kahn as a "place where independent women artists can meet, network, learn and grow individually and as a whole", this site features news features, interviews, reviews, lessons, and much more.

Cultural Events at the Library of Congress - scroll down the page to see listings for concerts as well as films, readings, lectures and more.

DC, MD, AND VA Arts - links to performing arts events.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts - homepage offers links to numerous performances including theater, opera, music, etc.

Washington City Paper - offers a weekly listing of events in and around Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Search or browse by music genre or browse arts and events for additional information.

Washington Opera - homepage of the Washington Opera. Click on "Enter" to see listings of upcoming performances (includes summaries of operas and brief biographies of performers).

Washington Performing Arts Society - homepage with links to performances.

Washington Post Entertainment Guide - select music from the category on the top or search for specific events. Updated daily.

Washingtonian Magazine - offers on online calendar of events for music and dance.

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts - offers numerous musical performances across all genres of music.
