Subject Guide: Financial Aid & Scholarships
Beware of scholarship scams. In 2000, the Federal Trade Commission found 37 scholarship websites with deceptive practices. Companies posing as scholarship search or financial aid foundations charged anywhere from $25 to $700 to guarantee eligibility for a minimum amount of financial aid, when such guarantees are not possible. Some advice: beware of services that "do all the work for you" because students must apply for aid themselves and do not give out credit card or bank account information to "hold a scholarship".
