Trinity, a comprehensive university in Washington, D.C., invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of English to teach African American literature and/or the literature of the African diaspora, commencing in August 2014. The successful candidate will join a strong team of faculty in Trinity’s historic women’s college, the College of Arts and Sciences, in which colleagues collaborate extensively and in which the general education curriculum reflects a commitment to the liberal arts. Because of Trinity’s focus on teaching excellence, the successful candidate will have a proven record of outstanding teaching, with at least two years of teaching at the university level desirable.
The successful candidate will have experience teaching both literature and composition to undergraduates, ideally in a liberal arts setting that is part of a highly diverse learning and teaching environment. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in English with a focus on African-American literature or the literature of the African diaspora, with the doctorate earned by the position’s start date; strong teaching recommendations; an ongoing scholarly agenda in the field; and the ability to present evidence of a commitment to innovative pedagogy that incorporates multiple methods of working with a diverse learning population. Further, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to practice the scholarship of integration while promoting new and innovative ways of teaching and learning. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to integrate and infuse technology into classroom teaching; be open to nontraditional, creative teaching strategies; and be willing to pursue professional development opportunities relevant to the position and in support of student success. Trinity’s faculty also advise students and contribute to a vibrant culture of teaching and learning with a student-centered focus.
